Melissa Hood, School Board member for Anderson One, recently entered District One students in 2012 BB&T “The School’s Got Talent” search and two of them made it to the top 11 finalists! They were selected from a panel of judges including members of the Hootie and the Blowfish band, Dean Felber and Mark Bryan along with Paul Graham.

Ms. Hood, shared, “The South Carolina School Boards Association sends out emails informing us of legislation and happenings going on around the state. In one of the emails, they requested that we nominate students for the contest. I immediately knew who I wanted to nominate. I recently attended the Powdersville Talent Show where I was privileged to hear some wonderful talent! I also recently attended a program at Palmetto High where I heard Wesley Hudson sing for entertainment for the evening. I then worked with the students, parents and administration to get a copy of their performances loaded to YouTube. From there I submitted their performances for the contest. I was honored to nominate each one and I am proud of their accomplishments!”

The next step is to visit the “South Carolina Future Minds” Facebook page, view the videos and vote for your selection. You can vote once per day. The qualified finalist with the most votes as of 11:59 p.m. on April 1 will be declared the winner.

Anderson One’s state finalists are Wesley Hudson, a senior at Palmetto and Devin Nix, a sophomore at Powdersville High. Wesley Hudson is a senior who has been a member for four years of the Palmetto High School Chorus and the Honors A Capella choir. He is also a singer with the Youth Praise Team at New Hope Baptist Church in Belton. Devin Nix is a sophomore at Powdersville High School with a deep, rich voice.

The student who wins the competition will perform LIVE at the televised “SC Teacher of the Year Celebration” on May 1 in Columbia. Her or she will also be invited to perform at the opening concert for the BMW Charity Pro-Am on May 18th in Greenville. During this concert the winner will perform with members of the Hootie and the Blowfish Band and other celebrity performers.
