Incumbent councilman David Harvell is facing a challenge by businessman Mike Smith for the Ward 3 seat on Williamston Town Coucnil. Harvell has served four terms on Williamston Town Council and hopes to be reelected to the Ward 3 seat. He is a graduate of Palmetto High School and Tri-County Technical College.

He is a Vietnam Veteran and is retired from the Army National Guard. He is a member of the Williamston Volunteer Fire Department.

Harvell is a retired insurance appraiser, educator and local businessman. He attends Calvary Baptist Church.

Harvell said progress has been made by the town since he has been in office. “We now have water and sewer plants running smoothly without being under a consent order,” he said. He pointed out that rates are being calculated by RUS. He said he wants the town to continue to work on getting new businesses and “to provide the best services we can for the town.”

Smith, who has owned and operated the Williamston Curb Market on Greenville Drive, said that he would like to be more involved and be a part of more growth and betterment for the town.

Smith, now 63, said he grew up in the local business and eventually purchased it. He said that during his daily activities he interacts with many local folks of Wiliamston and surrounding communities.

“With my public knowledge and understanding of others, I feel I can make a difference. My goal is to be of service to my fellow citizens and strive to see this town be all it has the potential to be,” he said.
