WILLIAMSTON – Homer Columbus Garrett, 88, of 1302 Hammond Avenue, widower of Calveen Campbell Garrett, died Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at his home.
Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late William Richard “Buddy” and Florence McClellion Garrett.  He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Dunean Mill after 40 years of service.  Mr. Garrett was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he was a former church treasurer, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Eugene Rhodes Sunday School Class and the King and Queen Club.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation was held 12:30-2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with funeral services following at 2 p.m.  Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

BETTY S. THURMOND
Betty S. Thurmond, 80, of Williamston, died on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 4, at New Prospect Baptist Church in Williamston. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

HARRY DOUGLAS SUTTON
Harry Douglas Sutton, 53, of Easley, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Easley, he was the son of Harry Sutton, Jr. of Pickens and Nell Aiken Sutton of Easley.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Bonita Sutton; daughter, Natasha Robinson of Simpsonville and Victoria T. Sutton of Easley; one grandson; sisters, Sarah Evans of Greenville, Christy Fuller, Missy Taylor and Chastity Horton, all of Easley, and Courtney Hill of Piedmont; brothers, David Sutton, Alvin Sutton, Rev. Timothy Sutton, and Anthony Rogers, all of Easley, and Corey Sutton of Pickens.
Funeral service was held Friday at Easley Union Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

PEGGY MCKEE
Peggy Smith Loggins McKee, 69, wife of Randell Cornelius McKee and the late Johnny Henry Loggins, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House, Anderson.
Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Elijah Smith of Seneca and the late Mildred Chapman Smith of Easley, she was a homemaker and a member of Tremont Church of God.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home, are two sons, Ricky Dale Loggins and Randy McKee, both of Easley; two daughters, Pamela Loggins Mason of Six Mile and Kimberly Pickens of Simpsonville; two brothers, Marshall Smith of Easley and Larry Smith of Williamston; twin sister, Patsy Gibson of Easley; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 4 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

WAYNE E. SHULER
Wayne E. Shuler, 69, of Piedmont, died Monday, December 31, 2012 in Greenville.
A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Lawson and Hyacienth Huffstettler Shuler.
He was the owner and operator of Hwy. 20 Market in Piedmont.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Shuler; four children, Marsha Sadler of CA, Heavenly Doolittle of Belton, Lemuel Wayne Shuler of Belton, and Holly Eaton of Williamston; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy and Blondina Shuler, both of Bryson City; and four brothers, Tommy, Vaughn, and L.D. Shuler, all of Bryson City, and Wade Shuler of Mt. Holly, NC.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Burial followed in Swain Memorial Park.

LINDY LOU CAMPBELL
Lindy Lou Campbell, 74, of Pelzer, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 in St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.
She was born in Greer and was a daughter of the late Edger and Nathlee Allen Boyce.
She was a homemaker and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Paul E. Campbell of the home; two sons, William and Rex Campbell, both of Clinton; one daughter, Melody Kennedy of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Juanita Thomas of Piedmont; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton. Interment followed at Pine Lawn Memory Gardens of Clinton.

LILLIE BELLE
CAMPBELL BRATCHER
Lillie Belle Campbell Bratcher, 84, widow of the late Samuel Bratcher, Jr. of Belton, died Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Hospice of the Upstate.
Born in Abbeville County, she was the daughter of the late Enos Hunnely and Ethel Jane Hamilton Campbell. She was a member of Belton Pentecostal Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Bratcher Parks of Belton; four grandchildren; brothers, Charlie Campbell of Ware Shoals and Jack Freeman of Honea Path; sisters, Francis Garrett of Pelzer, Ethelaan Chapman of Piedmont and Dorothy McMahan of Honea Path.
Graveside service was held Saturday at Garden of Memories.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital.

MICHAEL ‘MIKEY’ HICKS
PELZER – Michael ‘Mikey’ Hicks, 50, of Pelzer, SC passed away on December 31, 2012 at Rainey Hospice House.
Born on December 26, 1962, he was the son of the late Walter and Thelma Hicks.
He is survived by his spouse Guinette Hicks; sons, Michael Anthony Hicks, Jr., and Steven Owen; three step-children; brothers, Bobby Hicks, Tony Hicks and James Darby; sisters, Doris Burdette, Gena Gosnell, and Diane Howard, as well as his beloved pet Shadow.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie Lanier.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Real Life Church in Pelzer.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Rainey Hospice at 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC.
The family will be at their respective homes.

TERESA O’SHIELDS
Teresa Molina O’Shields, 69, of Pelzer, widow of Earl O’Shields, died Saturday, January 5, 2013 at her home.
She was a member of Greenville Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She is survived by her children, David O’Shields, Raymond Frank O’Shields and Tania Shell, all of Pelzer; sisters, Gwynette Binder, and Jenny Molina; brothers, Steven Hunter, and Errol Hunter; and two grandchildren.
A wake was held on Tuesday, January 8, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with funeral services following at the funeral home chapel.  Burial was at Pisgah Gardens in Brevard, NC.

LARRY JOE EPPS
Larry Joe Epps, 72, died January 2, 2013.
He was the son of the late Ernest Talmadge Epps and Grace Chandler Epps Godfrey.
Surviving are three children, Robert, Larry E., and Freya; three grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Davis.
A celebration of his life was held Saturday, January 5 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in the Cheddar Community in Belton.
Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church Building Fund.

DR. FRED CHAPMAN, JR.
CLINTON – Dr. William Fred Chapman, Jr., 81, of 62 Huntingdon Road, husband of Nancy Bryant Chapman, died Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community.
Born in the Shady Grove community of Anderson County, he was the son of the late William Fred, Sr. and Iver Cooper Chapman.
Dr. Chapman was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.  He earned his BS and Masters of Agricultural Economics from Clemson University and earned his PhD from the University of Florida.  Dr. Chapman retired from Presbyterian College in 1994 having served as the Academic Dean for ten years, Chairman of the Business Department, and a professor.  A proponent of public education, he was a former Chairman of the Laurens 56 School Board and past President of the South Carolina School Boards Association and the Southern Region School Boards Association.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Laurens.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Nancy Jean Chapman Ulmer and her husband, Ravel, of Lexington; son, Tony Chapman and his wife, Carol, of Easley; and grandchildren, Megan Elizabeth Ulmer, Justin Bryant Ulmer, Ashley Caroline Chapman Jones (Brian), Mary Elizabeth Chapman, Janelle Hunton and Randi Hunton.
Visitation was 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Martha Franks Chapel with funeral services following at 12 p.m.  A committal service was held at 3 p.m. at the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Belton.
Memorials may be made to the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, 1 Martha Franks Drive, Laurens, SC 29360.

SYBIL SMITH
Sybil Griffith Smith, 83, of 225 Moore’s Mill Rd., Pelzer, widow of William Aaron Smith, died January 4, 2013.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Ellison Capers and L.B. Bradley Griffith.  She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Easley.
Surviving are children, Rhonda A. Smith of Columbia, Steven G. Smith of Boiling Springs, Ronald D. Smith of Denton, TX, Anthony Brian Smith of Jacksonville, FL, Bradley Aaron Smith of Beaufort, SC; eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held on Monday, January 7 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Interment was held in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

PHIL PACE
Phillip Allen “Phil” Pace, 64, of Pickens, died Friday, January 4, 2013.
He was born in Pickens, a son of Pauline Reeves “Polly” Bagwell Pace of Pickens and the late William Hancel “Hank” Pace.
He was employed with American Cable Co. and was retired from Roadway Express. He was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church and had served in the National Guard.
Surviving are his mother, Polly of Pickens; daughter, Mandi Pace of Piedmont; and son, Matt Pace of Pickens; two grandchildren; and brother, Rev. William H. ‘Bill’ Pace of Newport Richey, FL.
Funeral service was held January 8 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

GEORGE MARTIN
WILLIAMSTON – George Washington Martin, 68, of Williamston, husband of Debbie Sims Martin, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Carol J. and Bonnie Durham Martin.  He was an active member and held numerous leadership positions at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.
George was founder of Martin and Martin Auctioneers, Inc. and Martin and Martin Cattle Company, Inc.  He had served on the board of the S.C. Auctioneer’s Commission. He was past president and was inducted into the hall of fame of the S.C. Auctioneer’s Association.  He was a producer of pure bred registered Black Angus cattle and an active member of the S.C. Angus Association.
He was a longtime board member of First Citizens Bank Advisory Board.  He served fourteen years in the S.C. National Guard.  George was a former John Deere dealer and active member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Joey Martin (Jennifer) of Williamston, Jeff Martin (Kellie) of Brooklyn, MS; special niece, Jennifer Martin Upton; brothers, David Martin and Paul Martin, both of Williamston; four grandchildren, Alexandria, Jayse, Emma, Abby Martin.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jack Martin.
A celebration of George’s life was held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2:30 pm at Guthrie Grove Church of the Abrahamic Faith.

LLOYD EDWARD CRABTREE
Lloyd Edward Crabtree, 67, of Piedmont, died Thursday, January 3, 2013.
Born in Oak Hill, OH, he was the owner of The Golf Store and was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Terri Kay Edwards and Nikki Ann Crabtree; son, Thomas Arthur Crabtree; and his former wife, Tammy Crabtree.

JOYCE ANN BUSH
Joyce Ann Bush, 75, of Conestee, widow of Frank Bush, Jr., died Thursday, January 3, 2013.
Born in Williamston, she was the daughter of the late J.D. Hill, Sr. and Tincey Blackwell.
She retired from Kemet Corp. and was a member of Conestee First Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Retha Wilson; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Sunday, January 6 in the Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

HELEN S. OWEN
Helen Stansell Owen, 73, wife of David “Hub” Owen, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Baptist Easley Hospital.
Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late William Abner and Grethel Cantrell Stansell.
She was employed with Family Practice Associates of Easley and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are; two sons, Tim Owen and Sammy Owen, both of Easley; three brothers, Mack Stansell and Ralph Stansell, both of Easley, and Wade Stansell of Powdersville; three sisters, Olive Surratt and Ellen Sponsler, both of Easley, and Linda Davis of Mauldin; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Monday at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

WILLIE CHIPIWALT
Floyd William “Willie” Chipiwalt, 64, of Pelzer, husband of Margaret Marion Markell Chipiwalt, died Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Hosanna Health and Rehab of Piedmont.
Born in Fairfax, VA, he was a son of the late Floyd Kidwell, Maurice and Minnie Callahan Chipiwalt. He retired from Scott Long Construction.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Sarah Butler of Easley; son, Jeremy Chipiwalt of Piedmont; sisters, Patty Titchenell of Woodbridge, VA, Pam Johnson of Jacksonville, FL, Melinda Haase of Culpepper, VA, and Angel Chipiwalt of Manassas, VA; and five grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, January 7 in the Chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
