Senator Billy O’Dell has been appointed to serve on the Hunley Commission. The H.L. Hunley, the world’s first successful combat submarine, was raised and excavated beginning in the year 2000. Work and research continues on the sub. The Commission was established to oversee the long term preservation and research efforts.

Senate President Pro Tempore John Courson said he appreciates O’Dell’s willingness to serve on the Commission. “The Hunley is a historic treasure unique to South Carolina,” Courson said. “It is critical that we make sure this treasure is protected and preserved, and Senator O’Dell will help ensure that happens.”

O’Dell said he was honored by the appointment. “I can’t thank Senator Courson enough for appointing me to this role,” O’Dell said. “The Hunley holds a special place in the history of not only our state, but in military combat history. I will help make sure that future generations have the opportunity to learn about this submarine firsthand.”
