SLED is investigating the death of a 39 year old female who was in custody of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office when she apparently went into cardiac arrest Thursday evening.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded to 607 Emily Lane Apartment # 4106 at approximately 1:38 p.m. regarding service of mental evaluation papers. Before deputies responded to the address they contacted EMS and requested assistance to transport the female by ambulance due to her not being able to sit in a patrol vehicle due to a physical condition. According to reports, once deputies arrived on scene they did make contact with the female and other family members inside her bedroom and she was told why they were there. The female agreed to go with deputies and EMS personnel and was placed onto a stretcher outside of the apartment to be transported to the hospital for the mental evaluation. The female became combative with EMS while on the stretcher and inside the ambulance and began having problems breathing. The Sheriff’s Office stated that they believe the female went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance while enroute to the hospital. She was pronounced deceased at Greenville Memorial Hospital at 3:35 p.m.

Due to it being an in-custody death, SLED has responded to conduct an investigation. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal investigation to make sure all policies and procedures were followed.
