West Pelzer Town Council met Tuesday night and voted to accept the low bid for the next phase of the town’s water system upgrades. The project will be funded by a CDBG grant, and the low bid, which was accepted, was just over $364,000. Young Plumbing was the contractor, and Mayor Peggy Paxton was authorized to sign the contracts once ACOG has approved some technical details.

The town will have to provide as much as $21,350 for any tap fees not covered by the grant, because the home owners do not qualify as LMIs, or low to moderate income households, for whom the grant is intended. The actual expenditure could be much less, since the actual number of those qualifying is not known at this time.

The Council also voted to postpone the planned town centennial celebration until May, in order to have better weather than might be expected on the actual date of December 24. Mayor Paxton expressed her concerns about the weather and asked if the Council had any thoughts. Councilman Blake Sanders responded by saying how well the recent Fall Festival had been received and how well it went, and suggesting that a Spring Festival be added to the town’s calendar.

“It would make more sense to do one thing and do it right than try to throw together a celebration in the time we have left, said Sanders. “The spring festival, and the fall festival could become signature events for the town.” Council agreed and voted unanimously to delay the centennial celebration until the spring.

Councilwoman Ann Odom was not in attendance.
