Williamston and Honea Path Firefighters were called to Palmetto Elementary School around 11:30 a.m. Monday to check out smoke in the cafeteria area. Firefighters were on theĀ  scene trying to determine what was causing the smoke. It appeared something was overheating. The Honea Path ladder truck responded in case it was needed. Williamston EMS and Police were also at the scene.
Students were evacuated to the playground area as a precaution until the problem could be determined. There was no immediate danger, officials said. District One Maintenance Personnel were at the school checking air condition units which was the suspected cause of the smoke, according to Williamston Fire Department Assistant Chief Harold Nichols.
