Police investigating Williamston shooting

The Williamston Police Department is investigating a shooting incident in Williamston at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, at 604 S. Hamilton Street. According to reports, the female victim was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, with a gunshot wound to the head. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Williamston police officials were able to provide only minimum information concerning the shooting proior to press deadlines Wednesday morning.

Lt. Ken Ebernickle was the ranking officer in the WPD headquarters Wednesday morning. Chief Tony Taylor was out of town for training and Capt. Kevin Marsee worked the crime scene all night, and was unavailable for interview.

Lt. Ebernickle could not provide the names of either the victim, or the suspect. He explained that the investigation was in its early stages and that no arrest has been made.

According to other media reports a man named Billy Smith was detained for interfering with the investigation. Capt. Marsee is also cited as stating that the identity of the shooter is known, and that Smith will be held until it is determined whether the shooting was an accident or not.
