Benefactors and recipients of the Mike Muth Basketball Scholarship Fund came together Saturday at the Williamston Municipal Center for a banquet celebrating the 20th anniversary of the scholarship initiative that has helped 30 Palmetto High School graduates attend college.

The scholarship fund was established in 1994 shortly after Muth’s death, to provide financial assistance to college-bound students who played basketball at Palmetto High. Muth was a standout basketball player at Palmetto High School in the early 1960s and went on to play for Furman University on scholarship.

As a high school player, Mike Muth scored 1,760 points during his career, had a 32.5 scoring average during his senior year and scored 54 points in a single game in an era before the three-point shot.

Guests included contributors, former scholarship recipients, members of the 1959-1963 Palmetto High School boys basketball teams, a member of the town council, Palmetto High principal Robby Roach, and PHS guidance counselors and basketball coaches.

The Mike Muth Basketball Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization. The fund relies on individual donations in order to provide scholarships. Since 1995, the fund has received over $200,000 in donations.

The fund is administered by a volunteer board of directors. See photos and more information in the Mar. 18 print issue of The Journal.
