Response thwarts PCH phone scam incident

Williamston officers investigated a Publishers Clearing House phone scam incident on Apr. 9.

According to reports, Teresa Harris, 10 E. Fourth St., Williamston reported she was called by a man with a Jamaica phone number claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House. According to reports he told her she had won $1.5 million dollars and to collect she had to purchase a Green Dot Money pack car worth $499 and when they came to collect it she would get the $1.5 million winnings.

After calling The Journal to report the scam, The Journal advised her to call the police department. Officers went to the residence to wait for the check delivery and while they were waiting, the suspect with a Jamaican sounding voice called and wanted the numbers of the card. After refusing to do so and stating she would not give the card until someone showed up, she asked if the man was scamming her. No one showed up.

Apr. 7 – Natasha Renee Poore, 36, 600 S. Hamilton St., Williamston reported a vehicle hit a tree in her next door neighbor’s yard and left, leaving trash and debris in her front yard. Damage was also reported at 506 S. Hamilton and 508 S. Hamilton. A dark color SUV was reported being seen leaving the location. Damage to two mailboxes and a trash can was estimated at $180. J. Taylor investigated.

Apr. 7 – William K. Austin, 39, 217 Murphy Rd., Belton was arrested for possession of a schedule II controlled substance after a maroon color Chevrolet Lumina was observed with an expired 45 day paper tag. He was issued a warning for the tag violation. However during a search of the vehicle two Lortab pills were found in the center console. J. Taylor investigated.

Apr. 7 – James Jason Justice, 38, 2 James Street #4 Pelzer reported his Jeep was keyed, causing $300 in damage, while parked on the roadside at Austin Street and North Green Street in Williamston. M. E. Simmons investigated.

Apr. 8 – John Russell Lackey, 44, 201 Crawford Rd., Belton was placed on trespass notice for Fast Fuel, 207 W. Main St., after a disturbance between him and his step-brother which occurred at the store. S. N. Robison investigated.

Apr. 8 – Stephanie Elizabeth Davenport, 23, 225 Brazeale St,. Belton reported an assault in which Steve Billy Davenport slapped her in the face with an open hand. After presenting to a judge, an arrest warrant was issued for assault 3rd degree. S. N. Robison investigated.

Apr. 8 – Keelan Ray Fowler, 34, 221 Pineview Dr., Pelzer was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after officers were dispatched to Mackey Street in reference to a female being threatened. The suspect was observed in a vehicle and upon contact officer observed a hypodermic needle in plain view in the vehicle. Upon a further search, . 6 grams of methamphetamine, 1.4 grams of marijuana and ZigZag marijuana cigarette papers were found in a Crown Royal bag in the vehicle. A pipe was also found. K. S. Apr. 9 – Jonathan Glen Wells, 32, 129 Painter Rd,. #3, Pelzer was arrested for outstanding warrant with Anderson County after being observed acting suspicious during a business check at Dollar General, 526 W. Main St. Cpl. L. E. Mulz investigated.
