Work to remove two of the bulbouts of Williamston’s Street Enhancement project began this week. The Town officially requested the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) make the change after numerous complaints about the new bulbouts and safety concerns were raised about emergency vehicles being able to navigate West Main during peak traffic times. The primary concern was traffic backup and flow on West Main Street due to vehicles making a left turn onto Minor Street, particularly during school traffic. After discussing possible options, members of a revived streetscape committee decided that the best course of action to remedy the safety concern would be to tear up the long bulbout and a smaller bulbout on the park side of West Main directly in front of Minor St. so that a turning lane can be created.
