I-26 repair schedule updated – Columbia

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) provides the following schedule for this week’s repair work on the section of Interstate 26 damaged by the fiery multi-vehicle crash that occurred in Richland County on May 27:

· SCDOT’s contractor is planning to close the westbound outside lane Monday at 7 p.m. to mill and replace asphalt in the outside lane and paved shoulder. All lanes will be open prior to 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

· Tuesday night the eastbound outside lane will be closed starting at 7 p.m. and back open prior to 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

· Wednesday night the eastbound inside lane will be closed at 7 p.m. and both the inside lane and center lane will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes to be back open prior to 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

· Thursday night the westbound inside lane will be closed at 8 p.m. and both the inside lane and center lane will be closed at 10 p.m. All lanes back open prior to 8 a.m. Friday morning.

The schedule for the June 26-29 weekend will be released later this week, according to the SCDOT.

The crash involved a fuel tanker which caused an extensive fire at mile point 105.6, damaging the barrier walls and roadway. The damaged area is located between the Piney Grove Road and St. Andrews Road exits, approximately one mile west of the I-20 interchange.

SCDOT urges motorists to use caution and obey the speed limits posted in the work zone for their own safety and the safety of highway workers. Conditions along I-26 and other major highways area available from SCDOT’s 511 Traveler Service, www.511sc.org.
