KEVIN W. MARKETON

Kevin W. Marketon, 54, of Simpsonville, died Friday, June 19, 2015 at McCall Open Arms Hospice House in Simpsonville.

Born in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of Irma Marketon of Oak Harbor, WA. and the late Reuben Marketon.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Marketon of Piedmont; stepdaughter, Nichol Huntington; three grandchildren; and his mother, Irma of Oak Harbor, Washington.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Oak Harbor.

CHARLES POORE

Charles Edward Poore, 83, of Belton, husband of Evelyn Hammond Poore, died Saturday, July 11, 2015.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Charles Washington and Annie Eaton Poore. He retired from Cushman Mill.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Lynn P. Shaw of Williamston; son, Doug Poore of Greenwood; sisters, Louise Knight, Sylvene Mayfield, Annie Mae Maw; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside service was held Tuesday at the Williamston Cemetery.

HOYT JORDAN

Hoyt Preston Jordan, 91, of Pelzer, widower of the late Mildred Locke Miller Jordan, died Friday, July 3, 2015.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Carl Preston and Minnie Lee Jordan. He retired from LTV Donaldson Center  and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Surviving is a sister, Evelyn “Eckie” Jordan of Anderson.

A graveside service was held Monday, July 6, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

BETTY MATHIS

Betty Jo Mathis, 74, of Belton, widow of Benny Mathis, died Thursday, July 2, 2015.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Margaret Hollingsworth. She retired from Bi-Lo Corporation and a was member of the Carpenter’s House in Piedmont.

Survivors include son, Michael Edward Mathis of Belton; daughter, Kimberly Lucille Mathis Jones of Doylestown, PA; one granddaughter; brothers, Danny Sweet and Roy Mealer, both of Stockbridge, GA; sisters, Annette Ellenburg of Jackson, GA, Ruth Smith of Stockbridge, GA.

Funeral service was held Sunday, July 5, at the Carpenter’s House. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JEFFREY COOPER “HAMBONE” HAMBY

PELZER, SC –  Jeffery Cooper (Hambone) Hamby, 49, passed away July 4, 2015.

Born May 26, 1966, son of the late Jerry Cooper and Sandra Ross Hamby.

Surviving aunts are, Elaine Bruce, Jackie King and Glenda Allen.

No services are planned.

IRA MARCENGILL

MOORE– Ira Columbus Marcengill, 93, husband of the late Leona Carver Marcengill, died Thursday, July 2, 2015.

Born in Westminster, he was a son of the late Samuel Edward and Beulah Richey Marcengill. He retired from Milliken & Company Cushman Plant and was a member of Belton Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He is survived by daughters, Deborah J. Marcengill of the home, Michelle Marcengill Davis of Iva, Terry Ann Marcengill Burdette of Liberty and Ann Marcengill Fontaine of Milton, GA; sons, James Michael Marcengill of Destin, FL and Richard Lane Marcengill of Greenwood; sisters, Beulah Haney of Westminster, Robbie Collins of Seneca, Rena Harris of Eastanollee, GA and Ollie Mae Smith of Lavonia, GA; brothers, R.B. Marcengill of Toccoa, GA and John H. Marcengill of Westminster; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 2:00 to 3:30 pm Sunday, July 5 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. A graveside service followed at 4:00 pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of daughter, Terry Ann Burdette, 179 Grace Lane, Liberty, SC.

ROBERT LEE HARPER

BELTON, SC – Robert Lee Harper, age 72, passed away on July 6, 2015 at his home.

Born in Anderson County on March 14, 1943, he was the son of the late Fred Harper and the late Ida Mae Harper.  He retired from the textile industry after many years of service and was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Willie Joyce Harper; a son, Robert M. Harper and his wife Tammy, and their children, Kimberly, Scottie, and Nicholas, of Walhalla, SC; step-sons, Anthony, Marty, and Glenn Sutherland; a step-daughter, Letisha S. Wardlaw; two brothers, Tom Harper and his wife Kathy and Truman Harper and his wife Martha; a sister, Sue Kelly; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Sue Jackson Harper; two brothers and two sisters.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home.

The family was at their respective homes and received friends, prior to the service, on Friday at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

“FRED” MIRGLE

PELZER – Grover Frederick “Fred” Mirgle, 70, husband of Joyce Elizabeth Barnes Mirgle, died Saturday, July 4, 2015.

Born in Greenville County, South Carolina, he was a son of Wilma Elizabeth Woods Kissimon, of Pelzer and the late Fred Mirgle. He was a U.S. Air Force 62-66 veteran. He became a professor and administrator at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, FL, and was later named Professor Emeritus. He was also a pilot and held several ratings through the Federal Aviation Administration. He was instrumental for getting the Department of Aviation Maintenance Science changed to honor Charles Taylor who was the Wright Brothers mechanic. He attended Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include sons, Michael D. Mirgle (Jennifer) of Deltona, FL, Douglas R. Mirgle, Sr. (Tara) of Honea Path; step-father, Alexander John “A.J.” Kissimon; sisters, Susan Kissimon Del Priore (Michael), Jan Kissimon Stitt (Tom) of Pelzer; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 10th, 2 pm at Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 430 Oak Hill Rd Belton, SC 29627. All were invited to visit with family in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

THOMAS POWELL

PELZER– Thomas Bruce Powell, 83, husband of Shirley Henderson Powell, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Thomas Cleo and Daisy Leopard Powell. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, retired from Gerber and was a member of Life Journey Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Danette Hanks (Richard) of Belton; sons, Tom Powell (Carol) of Rock Hill and Mark Powell (Donna) of Williamston; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by son, Greg Powell.

Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, July 9 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The service was held at 3:00 pm on Friday, July 10 at Life Journey Church.

Burial followed at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

LILLIAN KERNELLS

Mary Lillian Davis Kernells, 81, of Piedmont, wife of James Guyton Kernells, died July 9, 2015.

She was a daughter of the late Johnson and Leona Bryant Davis.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia Davis and Faye K. Earnhardt; son, Guyton  Kernells; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service was held  Saturday, July 11, at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

JOYCE ANN STRICKLAND

Joyce Ann Lockey Strickland, 65, wife of James R. Strickland of Gray Court, died Saturday, July 4, 2015.

Born in Bennettsville, she was a daughter of the late Woodrow and Edith Sanders Lockey.

She was a member of Glendale Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Brian Strickland and Scott Strickland, both of Gray Court; two sisters, Judy Bowen of Taylors and Janice Sullivan of Fountain Inn; two brothers, Bobby Lockey of Pelzer and Clyde Lockey of Inman; and six grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 7 at Glendale Baptist Church in Mauldin.

Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

WILLIAM ‘WILLY’ EUGENE CARTER

William “Willy” Eugene Carter, 57, of Iva, died Friday, July 10, 2015 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Dorothy Dunn Carter of Iva and the late James Junior Carter.

He was a member of Antreville Church of God.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his spouse, Rusty Fowler Carter of Iva; four children, Michael Jay Carter of Hartwell, GA, James Eugene Carter of Williamston, Joy Carter Norris of Anderson, and Terri Maria Bernice Barber of Norris; brothers, Tony Carter of Barnwell, Timmy Carter of Antreville, and Andy Carter of Antreville; sister, Lorraine Nichols of Antreville; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service was held July 15 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed at Antreville Church of God Cemetery.

DOUGLAS EARL BROOME

Douglas Earl Broome, 79, of Belton, husband of Janet “Jan” Jones Broome, died Friday, July 10, 2015 at his home.

Born in Belton, he was the son of the late Eugene and Irma Mattison Broome. He retired as a contractor and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are: son, Timothy “Tim” Broome of Williamston; daughters, Cristi B. Chapman of Belton and Lori Burkett of Powdersville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday at Cox Funeral Home.

JAMES H. SIMPSON

James Simpson, 78, of Easley, died Thursday, July 2, 2015 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Carrie Lindsey Simpson and Benjamin Cannon.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Simpson of the home; daughters, Wynona Boston of Mauldin, Emma Simpson of Easley, and Teresa Ayers of Greenville; sons, Carl Simpson of Georgia and Dwayne Simpson of Seneca; brothers, Robert Cannon of Williamston and Wallace Cannon of Liberty.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 7 at John Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley.

DYLAN BRADSHAW

James Dylan Bradshaw, 16, of Williamston, died Wednesday, July 8, 2015.

Born in Sylva, NC, he was the son of Tonna Matheny and Richard Phillips and Michael Bradshaw.

He was a student at Palmetto High School.

Surviving are his parents; sister, Ashley Adams of Clayton, GA; grandparents, Sandra and Jim Matheny of Murphy, NC, Shirley and Larry Phillips of Belton and Eva Bradshaw of Peachtree, NC.

A graveside service was held Saturday, July 11 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

WILLIAM ‘HOUSTON’ ROPER

William “Houston” Roper, 87, of Powdersville, husband of Bernice Miller Roper, died Saturday, July 11, 2015.

He was the son of the late George W. and Essie Williams Roper.

He retired from Crane Chevrolet in Easley and previously owned and operated the Powdersville Superette. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Powdersville.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Miller Roper; daughters, Linda Roper Thompson of Pelzer and Debra Roper McDowell of Powdersville; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his stepmother, Sue Coker Roper.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral service was held Wednesday at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

RICHARD ROSS

Thomas Richard Ross, 65, of Simpsonville, husband of Cynthia Hinkle Ross, died Sunday, July 12, 2015.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of Helen Williams Ross and the late James Richard Ross. He was retired from the County of Charleston and a member of Holly Ridge Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by daughter, Jessica Sterling of Charlotte, NC; son, Cameron Ross of Charleston; sisters, Linda Coleman of Williamston and Sherry Tate of Piedmont; brother, Steve Ross of Easley; four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11:00-noon Thursday, July 16 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. The service will follow at noon in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

GERALDINE CRENSHAW LANGDALE

Geraldine Crenshaw Langdale, 76, of Piedmont, wife of Jack Ray Langdale, died Monday, July 13, 2015.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Isabelle Patton Crenshaw.

Geraldine was a member of Woodruff Road Christian Church for over 20 years, and retired from Greenville County Public School District.  She was an active member with Senior Action of First Baptist Church of Piedmont and volunteered at several nursing homes.  She enjoyed karaoke, various crafts, painting, playing piano, and flower gardening.

Surviving, in addition to her loving husband of 60 years, are two children, David Langdale (Diane) and Lora Snell (Jim); two grandchildren, Alex and Emily Snell; and two sisters, Mattie Morton (Willard) and Betty Howard (C.E.).

She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Steve Langdale; and two brothers, J.B. and Charlie Crenshaw.

The visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with the funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. in the Northwest chapel.  Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, West.

JAMES SAMUEL FORD

James Samuel Ford, 67, formerly of Honea Path, died Tuesday July 7, 2015 at Rainey Hospice House.  He leaves behind a wife, Martha, of Anderson, and a son, Danny (Mandy) of Pelzer. Also surviving is one sister, Faye Putnam, of Rocky Mount NC, along with several nieces and nephews.

Sammy was predeceased by his parents, Morgan and Virginia Ford, and siblings Bobby Ford, Jimmy Ford, Leon Ford, Cathy Ford, Jack Ford, and Carl Ford.

He was formerly employed in the mixing room at Wilson Sporting Goods and he served in the Navy during Viet Nam.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18 at 3pm at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pelzer.  The family is at 311 Simpson Rd, Apt D-5, Anderson SC 29621.

JILL BRIGHT

Jill Doreen Fox Bright, 59, of Pelzer, died Friday, July 10, 2015.

Born in Valparaiso, IN, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Eugene and Karen Irene Pence Fox.

She is survived by sons, Robi Fox of Georgia, John Bacia of Florida and Walter Bright of Honea Path; daughters, Sheri Gifford of California, Kristina Durham of the home, Karen Coppedge and Amanda Bright, both of Indiana; sister, Jackie Fox of Florida; brothers, Mike and Doug Fox, both of Florida and Brian Fox of Tennessee; twenty-one grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
