During their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the Anderson School District One Board unanimously approved the purchase of 1,400 new auditorium seats for Wren and Palmetto High Schools. The project will cost approximately $223,000 and should be completed over the summer. Funding for the project will be from a contingency fund of the local option sales tax.

Superintendent David Havird said the project is not on the original project list but due to strong sales during the holidays, the district received additional funding from the 1 cent sales tax. The new seating will be indentical to seats installed in the Powdersville High Auditorium. Each school has seating for 700.

Havird said District One staff will remove the old seats, saving the district $8,000 to $10,000, and the seats that are removed will be made available for sale.

Assistant Superintendent Jane Harrison reported that the district plans to adopt the newly changed 10 point grading scale for third through eighth grade students.

The grading scale will provide a fair opportunity for all students when applying for college and scholarships, Harrison said.

She said a majority of educators and parents applaud the move which creates equity for students in competing for scholarships.

The new grading will allow more students to qualify for Life and Hope scholarships.
