Traffic accident turns into shooting investigation

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office investigated a traffic accident that turned into a shooting on Saturday. According to reports, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call in reference to a vehicle collision at 1726 Highway 418. Witnesses reported that the car struck a telephone pole and caught fire.

When deputies arrived, witnesses told them that the driver of the car was able to exit safely and he approached them asking them not to contact the police. The driver was told that the police were already on the way and a verbal altercation ensued. During the verbal altercation, one of the witnesses presented a bat and the driver of the vehicle presented a firearm.

A third party to this incident heard the commotion and rode his ATV to the incident location to see what was going on. As he approached the driver of the car he observed the firearm and started to turn away and go the opposite direction. At that point, the driver of the vehicle shot the operator of the ATV at least one time and then fled into the woods.

Several deputies and K9 units responded and began tracking the driver and were successful in locating him in a field as he tried to hide and evade capture. The gunshot victim was transported to Greenville Health System by EMS. South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to investigate the collision and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is investigatating the gunshot incident. The incident happened between Old Hundred Road and Reedy Fork Road.
