MARTY MANERS

PELZER—Martin Roger “Marty” Maners, 71, husband of Helga Diehm Maners, died Tuesday, August 2, 2016.

Born in High Point, NC, he was a son of the late Jesse W. and Irene Morgan Maners. He was the owner/operator of Marty’s Carpet and Tile and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Belton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Martin H. Maners (Tina) of Honea Path, Brian Smith (Mandy) of Belton; daughter, Candy Sell (Kent) of Belton; sisters, Rhonda Pierce of Lexington, NC, Chiquita Vaughn of Belton, Carolyn Vaughn of Anderson; grandchildren, Brittany and Lyndsey Maners, Nicholas and Madison Sell, Ryan, Robbie and Reid Smith.

He was predeceased by brothers, Jimmy and Jesse Maners.

Visitation was held Friday, August 5 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary. The funeral service followed at 3:00 in the mortuary chapel.

JACK EATON

Jack Michael Eaton, 63, of Pelzer, died Sunday, July 31, 2016.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Henry and Ruth Dickson Eaton.

He was formerly employed with Hilton Displays and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his son, Kyle Eaton of Pelzer.

Funeral service was held Thursday, August 4 in the funeral home chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

ANNE B. MARTIN

Anne B. Martin, 83, of Williamston, died Thursday, August 4, 2016 at her home.

Born in Ruskin, FL, she was the daughter of the late Annie Elizabeth Chapman Oren and the late Fred Valentine Oren.

She attended Williamston Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by five children; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one brother, Grady Oren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Webster Martin.

A private funeral service was held.

KEITH JAMES

Keith James, 70, of Easley, died Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Willie and Gertrude Williamson James.

He retired from General Electric and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Janie Summey James; son, Brian James of Easley; one granddaughter; and brother, Joe E. James of Piedmont.

A celebration of life was held Friday, August 5 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JANET GUISE WHITT

Janet Guise Whitt, 67, of Greer, wife of James “Jim” Whitt, died Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

Born in Richmond, VA, she was a daughter of the late Noel C. and Mary Lancaster Guise.

She had worked at Riverside High School and was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Bromley Ann Huff of Williamston, and Allison Clare Adams of Anderson; five grandsons; three sisters, Ann Carol Williams of Kennesaw, GA, Kathy Miller of Albermarle, NC, and Ellen Guise of Pittsburgh, PA; and one brother, Billy Guise of Lawrenceville, GA.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Monday, August 8 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.

HENRY JAY BROWN

Henry Jay Brown, of Albuquerque, NM, died Saturday, July 23, 2016.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Benjamin F. Brown II and Ruth Gravley Brown.

He retired from Grey New York and attended Interdenominational Riverside Church.

He is survived by sisters, Judy B. Hooper of Piedmont, and Sarah Brown of Greenville.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, August 10 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel. Burial followed in Clearview Baptist Church Cemetery.

MARGARET RUTH WENZ HICKS

WEST PELZER, SC – Mrs. Margaret Ruth Wenz Hicks, 89, of West Pelzer, SC, loving wife of the late Arthur Milton Hicks, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 at her residence.

Margaret was born in New York, NY on August 27, 1926 to the late William and Margaret Louise Gunther Wenz. She was a retired teacher in the New York City School System and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Anderson.

Margaret is survived by a son; Arthur F. Hicks of Pelzer, SC; a son-in-law; Doug Richter of Piedmont; four grandchildren; Douglas Michael Richter of Charlotte, NC, Timothy Matthew Richter of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Alison Marisa Piazza of Simpsonville, and Arthur F. Hicks, Jr. of Jacksonville, NC; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter; Lois Alexandra Hicks Richter; and a brother; Alvin Wenz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1303 McLees Road, Anderson, SC 29621. Interment followed at the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

JEAN THOMPSON BELLACK

Jean Thompson Bellack, 63, died Tuesday August 2, 2016, after a courageous battle with dementia.

Born on July 17, 1953 in Greenville, S.C., She was the daughter of the late William Edward Thompson.

Jean obtained her undergraduate degree From Clemson University in Math Education And her master’s Degree from Clemson University in Graphics Communication.

Jean taught in the Spartanburg, Greenville, and Columbia school systems before retiring in 2009. In her early years she enjoyed horse riding and piano playing.

We who are left behind will always miss her.

Surviving is her mother Betty Rollins Thompson of Powdersville, S.C., two brothers Steve Thompson and Larry Thompson, sister Barbara Thompson Turner, husband of 37 years John Richard Bellack, daughter Jade Walters and grandson Peyton Walters.

Visitation was held from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. Saturday August 6, 2016 and a Memorial Service followed at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, S.C. Burial service followed at Graceland West.

The family accepted friends and family following the burial services at the home of Betty Thompson.

DEWEY PERKINS

Dewey Lee Perkins, 76, of Piedmont, husband of Dawn Roberts Perkins, died Friday, August 5, 2016.

Born in Cateechee, he was a son of the late Plumer and Ruby Perkins.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran and was employed with Duke Energy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Wendy Hendrix of Piedmont and Lori Nicklaus of Pelzer; brother, Ken Perkins; sister, Carolyn Tompkins; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was held Sunday, August 7, at Bessie Road Baptist Church.   Burial was held Monday, August 8, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

EUZELIA RICHEY

Euzelia “Boots” Moon Richey, 86, of Williamston, wife of the late Francis Paul Richey, Sr., died Saturday, August 6, 2016.

Born in Townville, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Maude Stamps Moon. She retired from Kemet Electronics and was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughter, Brenda R. Cantrell ; two grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 9, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

WILLIAM ‘FRED’ SHACKELFORD

PIEDMONT – William “Fred” Shackelford, 92, widower of Mary Lillian Davis Shackelford, died Friday, August 5, 2016.

Born in Piedmont, he was the son of the late William “Arbe” and Belle Guest Shackelford.

Mr. Shackelford served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World. Mr. Shackelford worked for Anderson County School District 1 for 38 years, and was a principal at Concrete Elementary School for 26 of those years.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathy Shackelford Sullivan; one son, Graham Woody Shephard (Debra); four grandchildren, Pam Bolin (Scott), Casey Sullivan (Dana), Ashley Matho (Gene), and Annie Wisecup; and five great grandchildren, Bailee and Meghan Bolin, Eigen Matho, and Halona and Bryce Wisecup.

In addition to his parents and loving wife of 68 years, Mr. Shackelford was preceded in death by one son, Dwight Dean Shackelford; one son-in-law, Johnny Sullivan; and one sister, Elizabeth Cox.

Burial was held Monday, August 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens. A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with a visitation to follow until 3:00 p.m.

ALVIN AUGUSTS ‘GRANDGEORGE’ MCCALL JR.

Alvin Augustus McCall, Jr. (Grandgeorge) of Greenville, SC entered into eternal rest on July 31, 2016.

Born May 13, 1927 in Pelzer, SC, son of the late Alvin Augustus, Sr. and May Belle McCall. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Wanda; and daughter, Karen.

He is survived by two sons, Mark(Sylvia), Jeff(Holly); daughter, Paula Marsh (Chris) along with eight grandchildren: Christopher, Catherine, Heather, Karen, Olivia, Noah, Kaitlyn, James; and one brother, Andrew.

He served in the Navy from May 1945 to December 1946. Entered Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, Nashville, TN in fall of 1947. Later attended Steed College in Johnson City, TN majoring in accounting. He returned to Pelzer in 1951 to start working for Elliott, Davis & Co. On February 23, 1952, he married Wanda Ervin, the love of his life. In 1956 he started dabbling in the homebuilding and development business until 1958 when he ventured out full-time. Along with development, he also operated a car dealership in Sumter in 1962. In 1970 he had the vision to build and expand on a family steakhouse business. He built nine Western Family Steak Houses before selling in 1976. In July 1978, he opened his first Ryan’s Steak House building the concept to 270 company stores and 25 franchised. Ryan’s went public in 1982 with an initial public offering on July 13. He retired in 1992 to manage his own private investment business.

Alvin was an active member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church. His belief in helping those less fortunate was evident in the many charities he supported. In addition to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, Alvin and Wanda were involved with Meals on Wheels, Epworth Children’s Home, Miracle Hill Ministries, Salvation Army, McCall Campus of the Upstate Chapter of the American Red Cross, McCall Hospice House, Christian Learning Center of Greenville, Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Research, Triune Mercy Center and many other charities that held a special place in his heart. He was also a recipient of The Order of the Palmetto.

We want to thank his wonderful caregivers, Eliana, Shannon, Lynda, Judy, Janet, and Sandra.

The children would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to Suzy Glymph for her dedication, love and support for our Dad.

Visitation was held Monday, August 8, 2016, from 1:00 – 2:15 at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland St, Greenville, SC. followed by the celebration of his life at 2:30. Interment followed at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

DEBRA GARRETT SKELTON

Debra Garrett Skelton, 64, went home to be with the Lord on July 27, 2016. She was born on September 15, 1951 and was the daughter of the late James Garrett and Bonnie Hartwell.

She is survived by brothers Randall Garrett and Chester Garrett (Barbara) of Williamston, and Sister Sherree Eskew (Steve) of Pelzer.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

ROB EVATT

WILLIAMSTON—Robert Anthony Evatt, 32, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska on February 15, 1984, he was the son of Angela Annette Evatt and the late Michael Raymond Brown. He was a 2002 honor graduate of Palmetto High School and earned a Business Degree from the University of South Carolina in 2007. He was a highly decorated U.S. Army veteran and recipient of the purple heart. He loved to play the guitar, was a gamer and loved his dog, Haley.

In addition to his mother of Belton, he is survived by sisters, Teresa Jo Hegdahl of Slana, Alaska and Kristi Lee Evatt-Moore of Anderson.

He was predeceased by adopted parents, Robert Henry and Ressie Jo Evatt.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m., at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer with burial at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

SHARON LEOPARD HILL

Sharon Leopard Hill, 70, of Pelzer, died Sunday, August 7, 2016 at her home.

She retired from Minnie Maid of Greenville and Cash and Karry of Greenville.

She was a member of Tremont Church of God of Greenville.

Surviving are children, Teresa Bishop of Pelzer, Dennis Hill of Pelzer, Tammy Chapman of Pickens, and Angie Holliday of Liberty; sister, Linda Baker of Pickens, Michael T. Leopard of North Augusta; stepbrother, Buck Simmons of Greenville; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Michael “Mike” Dennis Hill.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m at Tremont Church of God in Greenville.
