AUBREY BURTON, SR.

PELZER – Aubrey Leonard Burton, Sr., 93, husband of Edna King Burton, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Claude Albert and Bertie Louise Rampey Burton. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart. He retired from Kendall Company and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Pelzer Lions Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Debra Sims of Pelzer; sons, Edward Donald “Donnie” Burton and Robert Leonard “Bobby” Burton, both of Pelzer, Joseph Mark Burton of Liberty; step-daughter, Marilyn Cox of Piedmont; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen Roberts Burton; son, Aubrey Leonard Burton, Jr.; brothers, Albert Dean, Theron Edgar, Delmar Ray and Milford Louis Burton; sister, “Boots” Dodson.

Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, August 25 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 am Friday, August 26 at Cannon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, P.O. Box 268, Pelzer, SC 29669.

‘DOUG’ ROGERS

PELZER – William Douglas “Doug” Rogers, 53, died Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Richland County, he was a son of Billy Joe and Doris Sloan Rogers.

In addition to his parents of Pelzer, he is survived by brothers, Derek (Penny) Rogers of Pelzer, David (Lori) Rogers of Lexington; five nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

SARA DAVIS

PELZER – Sara Chapman Davis, 89, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Beulah Mae Phillips Chapman. She retired from Revlon and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughter, Vickie Lynn Davis of Pelzer; sister, Amelia Griffin of Ware Shoals; brothers, Bill Chapman of Pelzer and Larry Chapman of Williamston; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Friday, August 26 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. A graveside service followed at 1:00 pm at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

IVA YOUNG

Iva Esther Lee Davis Young, 94, formerly of Pelzer, widow of Harrison Young, died Thursday, August 25, 2016.

Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late James Sanford and Ada McClain Davis.  She was a member of West Pelzer Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Ernest Nathan Young of Pelzer; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Sunday, August 28, at West Pelzer Baptist Church. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

BERTHA MAE RICE

PIEDMONT – Bertha Mae Rice, 96, of 721 South Piedmont Hwy, widow of Richard Rice, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence George and Feddie Tripp Allison. Mrs. Rice was formerly employed by Model’s Coat Industries and was an Avon representative for forty years.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends.  She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church and the Golden Jewels Sunday School Class.

Survivors include daughter, Joyce (Randolph) Turner of Piedmont; grandson, Randy (Dell) Turner of Greenville and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Bennett and Jessie Allison; three brothers, Edgar Allison, Clarence Allison and William Allison.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 26, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The funeral service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 27, at Rehoboth Baptist Church.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family is at the home.

LUCILE WHITLOW

PELZER—Lucile Lyles Whitlow, 95, widow of Delbert T. Whitlow, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016.

Born in Vinemont, AL, she was a daughter of the late Harold D. and Eria Holmes Lyles. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She was survived by daughters, Jo Ann Kennedy (Jack) of Clarksville, GA, Patricia Mashburn (Charles) of Williamston, Janet Graves (David) of Southport, NC; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

A cryptside service was held Monday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 10 Academy Street, Williamston, SC 29697.

A lunch was prepared for the family and friends immediately after the service in the Calvary Baptist Church social hall.

REV. JOHN L. SMITH

Rev. John Lewis Smith, 80, of Williamston, husband of the late Doris Evelyn Bramlett Smith, died Sunday, August 28, 2016.

Born in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late Furman C. and Bessie U. Smith Smith.  He was a Church of God minister for twenty-five years and founder of the Ware Place Church of God.  Rev. Smith was also a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Survivors include sons, Avery Lewis Smith and Randall Keith Smith, all of Pelzer; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, August 31, at Ware Place Church of God.  Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

LILLIE N. TERRY

Lillie Myral Nelson Terry, 98, of Simpsonville, widow of Fred Oscar Terry, died August 26, 2016 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Exia Simmons Nelson, a retired textile employee and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are three sons, Darrell Terry of Antelope, CA, Sonny Terry of Elk Grove, CA, and Artis Terry of Powdersville; one daughter, Wilma Hand of Simpsonville; one brother, David Nelson of Welford; one sister, Pearl Boon of Pelham; 13 grandchildren; and many great-and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 30 at The Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Graceland East Memorial Park.

CARL FRANKLIN ‘FRANK’ NORWOOD

Carl Franklin “Frank” Norwood, 62, of Piedmont, died Sunday, August 28, 2016.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Warrior Roger and Virgie Mae Lindsey Norwood.

He was a member of West Gantt First Baptist Church and was employed at Regional Management Corporation.

He is survived by three children, Chris Norwood, Haley Williams, and Tiffany Norwood; four grandchildren; a brother, Danny Norwood; and the mother of his children, Cathy Rossi Norwood.

Funeral service was held August 31 at West Gantt First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

THYROL YVONNE OWENS NEWTON

Thyrol Yvonne Owens Newton, 70, of Williamston, died Monday, August 29 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Jim Bob and Bessie Jones Owens.

Surviving are daughter, Karen Reason of Belton; brothers, Jim Ed Owens of Williamston, Melvin Owens of Anderson, Marvin Owens of CA, Billy Owens of Belton, and GAine Owens of Starr; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Cox Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
