Anderson County business owner, Mary Ellen Harvell, was arrested last week by South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) investigators for one count of operating a business without a retail license. Harvell, owner of Debra’s Design, Inc., had a retail license revoked in April 2016 for unpaid business taxes amounting to more than $10,000. After the license was revoked, the defendant was advised to close her business and stop making retail sales, but Harvell continued to make sales without a valid license. The business is located at 2404-B Anderson Hwy.
If convicted, the defendant faces fines up to $200 and/or up to 30 days in jail.
The SCDOR is committed to the fair administration of tax laws. By taking enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers, the Department seeks to prevent unfairly increasing the tax burden on those who do comply, according to a department spokesperson.
