EARL BENJAMIN ELWELL

Earl Benjamin Elwell, 94, of Belton, widower of Margaret T. Pack Elwell, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Abbeville, he was the son of the late Henry and Mabel Campbell Elwell.

He was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God of Abrahamic Faith of Pelzer and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Surviving are sons, Bruce Elwell and Ronald Elwell, both of Piedmont; Greg Elwell of Pelzer; brother, Luther Elwell; sisters, Vera Hall and Martha L. Ware; and six grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday at Guthrie Grove Church of God of Abrahamic Faith. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Guthrie Grove Church of God of Abrahamic Faith.

DOYLE W. SIMMONS

Doyle William Simmons, 82, of Taylors, widower of Mildred Ann Wooten Simmons, died October 4, 2016 at his home.

Born in Six Mile, he was a son of the late John H. and Nina Haynes Simmons. He retired from Steel Heddle and was a member of Praise Cathedral.

Surviving are two daughters, Robyn Simmons Harris of Taylors and Renee Perry of Williamston; one son, Ronnie Simmons of Duncan; one brother, Roy Simmons of Saluda; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday at The Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memory Gardens.

WELDON HOLDER

PIEDMONT – Weldon Edward Holder, 77, husband of Chyrll Santini Holder, passed away Monday, October 3, 2016.

He was the son of the late Jessie and Hattie Holder Smith. He was currently employed with Process Mechanical, Inc. He was a member of The Mill Church in Pickens and Hejaz Shrine Temple.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Pamela Law (James) of Loris, Linda Tindle (Roger) and Tracy Hollingsworth (Tony), all of Piedmont; son, Bryan Holder (Crystal) of Williamston; grandchildren, Nicole, Jeremy (Erin), Jamie (Stephanie), Jordan, Gailey, Bethany, Reese and Brinkley; great-grandsons, Kameron, Colt, Rivers and Rhett.

Visitation was held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, October 6, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

A memorial service was held at 5:00 pm Friday, October 7, at Tanglewood Baptist Church, Greenville.

EDITH JONES

Edith Hooper Jones, 91, of Williamston, widow of Robert Edward Jones, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Harvard and Beulah Kesler Hooper.  She was retired from the Singer Plant and a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.  During WWII, she was a ship welder.

Survivors include son, Dennis Gaylord Jones of Williamston; brother, Howell G. Hooper of Townville; sisters, Luzelle Corbin of Belton, Dorothy Booth of Belton, Guynelle Brooks of Calhoun Falls, Laura Jo Corley of Greenwood, Linda McGaha of Anderson; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, October 8 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

PATRICIA JOYCE BROWN HUGHES

Patricia Joyce Brown Hughes, 58, of Pelzer, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late John Milton Brown Sr. and Joyce Brown McCartt.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughter, Natasha Joyce Newsome of Williamston; sisters, Deborah Elizabeth Mann of Anderson, Vivian Mae Morgan of Honea Path and Barbara Brown Gannaway of Panama City Beach, FL; and two grandchildren.

LEAH GOSNELL

Leah Madison Gosnell, of Williamston, daughter of Jason Lee and Emily Auffhammer Gosnell, died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at her home.

Leah was a second grade student at Spearman Elementary School.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by sisters, Jade and Noel Gosnell of the home; grandparents, Kathie and Wade Gosnell of Long Wood, FL, Mary and Gary Auffhammer of Anderson; uncle, Danny Auffhammer of the home; aunt and uncle, Summer and Thomas Gosnell of FL.

The family received friends Sunday, October 9, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

A celebration of Leah’s life was held Monday, October 10, at 5:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel.

MARSHA ROSS

Marsha Ross, 75, of Pelzer, widow of William Dendy “Buddy” Ross, died Friday, October 7, 2016.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Virgil Lee and Rhea Fleming Lavender. She was a homemaker and a member of Pelzer United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Dendy Lee Ross of the home; a son, Eric Ross, of Anderson; granddaughter raised in the home, Kayla Rhea Ross Finley, of Simpsonville; three grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

Graveside services were Tuesday, October 11, at Pine Lawn Cemetery.

HAROLD NICHOLS, SR.

PELZER – Harold Franklin Nichols, Sr., 73, husband of Phyllis Harrell Nichols, passed away Friday, October 7, 2016.

Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Jessie Leemon and Maude Haguewood Nichols. A U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran, he retired after twenty-two years of service. He was a retired master deputy from the Greenville County Sherriff’s Department, a past master of the Judson Masonic Lodge and member of the Williamston Masonic Lodge.

Additional survivors include daughter, Cathy Bagwell (John) of Pelzer; sons, Harold Nichols, Jr. (Julia) of Williamston, Kevin Nichols of Pendleton; sister, Maude Shiflett; brothers, Calvin and Earl Nichols, all of Anderson; grandchildren, Jill and Michael Heaton, Blake Bagwell, Kincaid, Steven and Holly Sue Nichols.

Visitation was held Sunday, October 9, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at Gray Mortuary. The service followed at 2:30 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. He was entombed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

DEBORAH CABLE HENSLEY

Deborah Cable Hensley, 60, of Powdersville, died Sunday, October 2, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Tiffin, OH, she was the daughter of the late Clell and Mary Maxine White Cable.

She was employed by Rosenfeld Einstein.

Surviving are her son, Lee Wellman of Pickens; one granddaughter; two brothers, Clell Cable II of Morganton, NC and Robert Cable of Greenfield, IN.

No scheduled services are planned.

IRENE DOWIS

PIEDMONT – Mellie Irene Dowis, 81, wife of the late Charles S. Dowis died Friday, October 7, 2016, at her home.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late James Ralph and Clara Watson Lollis.  She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Piedmont.  Irene was a devoted wife for 61 years, a loving mother and grandmother who demonstrated amazing strength and perseverance despite many health challenges.

She is survived by son, Eddie Dowis (Brenda) of Abbeville; daughters, Kay Townsend (Biff) of Piedmont, Cathy Smith (Avery) of Pelzer, Janet Baldwin (Kenny) of Piedmont; sisters, Lola Baker, Eva Jones, Peggy Chapman, Sarah Alexander, Dottie Griffith, Annie Waddell; brothers, Herman and Paul Lollis; grandchildren, Charlie Dowis (Lacey), Donald Dowis (Trish), Amy Bryson (Kevin), Angie Smith (Frankie), Crystal Rapien (John), Tonya Smith, Teresa Warren (Adam), April Rapien (Bobby), Scott Smith (Crystal), Nicole Dowis, and Serena Baldwin; twenty-eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by sisters, Lois Lark, Agnes Thrasher, and Judy Moon; brothers, Truman, Alvin, Jerry, Ray, Eddie, and Joe Lollis.

Visitation was from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 9, at Beech Springs Tabernacle.

The funeral service followed at 4 p.m. at the church.  Burial was at Grove Station Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be at her home.

JAMES ‘DUKE’ FISHER

MAULDIN – James Caldwell “Duke” Fisher of Mauldin, SC passed away Tuesday morning, October 4, 2016 in Magnolia Place of Greenville.

Born in Tryon, NC on December 26, 1942, he was the son of the late James Kitchen Fisher and Beulah Dalton Fisher. Mr. Fisher was a graduate of Tryon High School and went on to play basketball for UNC Chapel Hill as a freshman and was named “Freshman of the Year”. He then attended Gardner Webb and Mars Hill College where he graduated. He went on to receive his MED from Clemson University. Mr. Fisher was a devoted and beloved educator and coach in both North and South Carolina for over thirty years and retired from Mauldin High School where he spent most of his years and was recognized as Coach of the Year and North/South All-Star Coach.

He was a former varsity football coach at Woodmont  High School.

Surviving are three daughters, Shannon F. Murphy (Terry) of Prosperity, Lauren F. Dillard (Jeff) of Bel-Air, MD and Jaime F. Browning (Kyle) of Simpsonville. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Saturday, October 8 in Mauldin First Baptist Church, Mauldin.

A private burial will take place at a later date in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC.

MARIA MANDALAS

Maria Mandalas, 89, of Powdersville, wife of Peter Mandalas, died Saturday, October 8, 2016.

Born in Stefania, Greece, she was a daughter of the late Angelo and Panorea Lekkas.

She was a member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Pitsa Johnson of Sandy Springs, Nora Stathos and Dimitra Mandalas, all of Powdersville; two sisters, Phyllis Cox and Eleni Troubetaris, both of Greenville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 13 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, West.

KENDALL PLESS

Kendall Rylee Pless, infant daughter of Tracy Terrell and Kelli Anne Jackson Pless of Honea Path, died Monday, October 10, 2016.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by sisters, Nikki Patrick, Erica Bowie, Evie Pless, Maghan McGill; brother, Hunter Pless, grandparents, Dendy and Elaine Jackson and Robert Pless.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, at the Williamston Church of God.

The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be in the Williamston City Cemetery.

GLENN WAYMOND HALL

Glenn Waymond Hall, 95, of Piedmont, widower of Vergie Davis Hall, died Monday, October 10, 2016.

Born in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late Henry and Carrie Reid Hall.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Welcome Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Reggie D. and Tutti Hall of Powdersville; daughter, Glenda H. and Larry F. Callicutt of Bryson City, NC; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hester Gibbs and Francis Wood.

The visitation will be held Thursday, October 13 from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Funeral service will be held Friday at noon in the Northwest Chapel. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, West.

The family will be at 606 Jameson Drive, Piedmont.

WAYNE COTHRAN

Wayne Stewart Cothran, 63, of Pelzer, died Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late James Alton and Elsie Stewart Cothran. He retired from School District of Greenville County and was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, Piedmont.

He is survived by sisters, Carolyn Barnes of Pelzer and Betsy Latham of Iva.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 pm Thursday, October 13, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 14, at Rehoboth Baptist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville.
