WILLIAM ALLEN CULBERTSON

William Allen Culbertson, of the Kents Ridge Road section of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, was born in Harlan, Kentucky on March 27, 1939, and passed away peacefully on December 25, 2016. Better known as Bill or “Wild Bill”, he was an avid outdoorsman with many adventures and tall tales from his hunting and fishing travels across the US. His special hunting buddies included Justin Reed, Bud Culbertson, Dale and Lee Fuller, Mountain Man Mike, Samp Cruey, and Billy Ball along with all his Bobby Brown State Park fishing buddies including Bill “Kingsfish” Meade and a host of other family and friends.

Bill’s early passion was working on cars and winning many trophies in his souped up red ‘55 Chevy Pick-up at Cedar Hills Raceway. Bill owned and operated the Doran Texaco where he led the community and mentored many local youths. He loved the Washington Redskins, Virginia Tech Hokies, his tailgating crew, the Cripple C Ranch hands (past and present), and Shiner Bock beer.

A special place for Bill was Cripple C Ranch, his farm on Kent’s Ridge, where he raised beef cattle, shared many memories of camp outs, summer days, and legendary Pig Roasts gone by. He brought light and love to friends and family through his devotion and humor. His humble spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Marie Powers Culbertson; his father, William Mahone Culberson Jr.; and an infant son, Robert Allen Culbertson.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susie Culbertson; his four children, William Mahone “Mac” Culbertson III, Dusty Holcombe, June Marie Wilson, and Jonce Allen Culbertson; his children by love, Mary Catherine Culbertson, Toni Holcombe, Jerry Wilson and Adrianna Culbertson; his grandchildren, Catherine Anne Culbertson-Shelton and husband Captain Josh Shelton, William Mahone “Will” Culbertson IV, Brogan Holcombe, Sam Culbertson, Alden Wilson, Emma Holcombe, Nelia Culbertson, Becca Holcombe, Jonce Allen Culbertson II, Eliza Culbertson; sisters, Carol Meade and husband Bill of Williamston, South Carolina and Elaine Ratliff and husband Eddie of Bonita Springs, Florida, and his brother, George Culbertson and wife Deb of Ridgefield, Washington; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Dale Smith, Mary Hurt, Steve Lester, and Pat Stiltner.

Finally, we would like to thank and honor Helping Hands Hospice, the dedicated staff of Commonwealth Memory Care, and the special friends and staff of Community Home Care Services for helping Bill during his passing. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would request donations be made in Bill’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association, Helping Hands Hospice, or Hunters for the Hungry.
