HARRIET JEAN LOOPER

PELZER – Harriet Jean Bigham Looper, 72, widow of Joe James Looper, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at her home.

Harriet was born in Richland County on September 19, 1944 and was a native of Great Falls, SC.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph Eugene and Harriet Robinson Bigham.  She retired from Moore’s in Williamston and was a member of Beech Springs Church.

Survivors include daughter, Natalie Monson (Chris) of Chapin; son, Tony Looper (Debbie) of Honea Path; grandchildren, James Murphy (Lynn), Allison Goetz (Chris), Brandee Dow (Jamie), D.J. Flynn, Daniel Pate, Ashley Fields (David); thirteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, at Beech Springs Church with visitation following the service.

BILL ELLISON

BELTON—William R. “Bill” Ellison, 94, husband of the late Aileen Eaton Ellison, died January 14, 2017 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Bessie Mae Watson Ellison and Charles Ambrose Ellison. Bill had been a faithful, active member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, in the Cheddar community, where he served in numerous capacities throughout his 75 years there, until his recent illness. Bill graduated from high school at Cedar Grove School and served in the Army’s 10th mountain division in Italy in WWII. After the war, Bill farmed and was self-employed as a painting and sheetrock contractor. He was a charter member of the Cheddar Fire Department and was currently serving on the Board of Directors.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Haynie and Charles; and one infant sister, Margaret.

Survivors include two sons, Ray and Richard (Peggy); and one daughter, Sylvia (Larry) Williams; sisters, Ruth Caldwell and Joyce Dean of Belton; brother, Mahlon Ellison of Williamston. He had six grandchildren: Craig and Ken Ellison, Melissa Hood, Tracy E. Lollis, Emery Williams, and Joellyn Hayden. He had 13 great-grandchildren, the pride of his life, Drew and Anna Hood, Matt and Thomas Ellison, Sydney Bracken, Cassidy and Kennedy Lollis, Emery II, Kai and Jada Williams, Joeli, Carrie and Jonathan Hayden. He is also survived by his special friend, Vonnie Ellison.

A celebration of his life was held on Tuesday, January 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. His family gathered for a time of visitation from 10:00 to 11:30 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church before the service.

The family is at his residence.

EUNICE SPEARMAN

Eunice Ann Trotter Maynor Spearman, 67, of Williamston, widow of Donald Edward Maynor and Paul Curtis Spearman, died   Friday, January 13, 2017.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Fletcher and Rachel Hudson Trotter. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include daughter, Donna Hatke (Keith) of Lafayette, IN; son, Earl Spearman (fiancé, Angela) of Williamston; sisters, Dorothy Roberts, Betty Street, Louise Nelson, Linda Garrison; brother, Clyde Trotter; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, January 17, at Gray Mortuary. Burial followed at Shiloh United Methodist Church.

HAROLD LEROY RICKETTS

Harold Leroy Ricketts, 88, of Belton, husband of Lula Turpin Ricketts, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late Robert Earl and Cleo Blye Smith Ricketts.

He was a farmer and retired from textiles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: sons, Steve Ricketts of Belton, Michael Ricketts of Anderson, Kenneth Ricketts of Belton; daughter, Kathy Shuttleworth of Easley; brother, Marshall Ricketts of Belton; sister, Jo Ann Martin of Pelzer; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday at Union Grove United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home.

‘PAT’ MURPHY

Patricia “Pat” Jean Jackson Murphy, 63, of Pelzer, wife of Robert Allen Murphy, died Monday, January 16, 2017 at her home.

Born in Fort Worth, TX, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Patsy Fern Brewster Jackson.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Mike Stoughtenger of Belton, Shaun Stoughtenger of Pelzer, Jeff Mongin of Pelzer, Jashua Mitchell of Greenville; daughters, Jessica Mayfield of Pelzer and Rebecca Gaylord of Berea; sister, Kay Renfore of Macon, GA; brother, Marvin Jackson, II of Charleston; twenty-five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

MATTIE LEE JORDAN BANNISTER

BELTON – Mattie Lee Jordan Bannister, 93, widow of Troy “Bill” Bannister, formerly of Eastview St. died Monday, January 16, 2017 at NHC Healthcare of Anderson. Born in Belton, she was the daughter of the late Jode Cleveland and Nancy Mae Epps Jordan. She was a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church. Special thanks to her caregiver, Mary Ann.

Surviving are: daughters, Betty Cothran and husband Rick, and Patsy Bair and husband Lanny all of Pelzer; sisters-in-law, Sue Reed and Ruth Jordan; 6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Harrison Jordan; sisters, Ida Fisher and Mae Jordan.

Service will be held 11am Thursday at Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Harling and Rev. James Bannister. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8pm Wednesday at Cox Funeral Home.

ALYCE MCELROY DAVIS

Alyce McElroy Davis, 89, of Anderson, died Monday, January 16, 2017 at the Rainey Hospice House of Anderson.

Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late William T. McElroy and Earle M. McElroy.

She retired from Gates Firestone in Anderson as a Bookkeeper.

She was a member of Orrville Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtiss R. Davis.

Graveside service was held Wednesday, January 18 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Orrville Baptist Church, 2620 South Main Street, Anderson, SC 29624.

DORIS HAGANS

Doris Pruitt Hagans, 80, of Williamston, died Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Anderson County to the late Fostell Pruitt and Jennie McGowan Pruitt.

She was the widow of the late Bobbie Lee Hagans and was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church in Honea Path.

Surviving is her sister, Dollie Harrell.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at noon at New Friendship Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

WILLARD VIRGIL AMMONS

Willard Virgil Ammons, 77, of Piedmont, husband of Nance Wilson Ammons, died Sunday, January 15, 2017.

A native of Prineville, OR, he was the son of the late Paul Alexander and Velma Keeton Ammons.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from Fluor Daniel.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, son, Todd Ammons of Greer; sister, Sandra Ammons of Rock Springs, WY; brothers, Douglas and Ronald Ammons, both of Powell Butte, OR; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 19 from 4:45 – 5:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel.

CECIL A. STEWART

Cecil Alexander Stewart, 88, of Piedmont, husband of Helen Davenport Stewart, died Sunday, January 15, 2017.

He was born in Piedmont to the late Orten Welborn and Maggie Hill Stewart. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Alan Stewart; two daughters, Robbie Vaughn and Karen Lowe; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Fletcher Funeral Service. Burial with Military Honors will follow at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
