Greenville County School Resource Officers have arrested 19 year-old, ZaQuel Shumaud Lewis, a student at Carolina High School, after locating a loaded handgun in his backpack. This morning, (Tuesda) just after 8 am, school administrators at Carolina High School, located at 2725 Anderson Road, Greenville, pulled Lewis aside after smelling what they believed was marijuana coming from his person. When informed of the necessity to conduct a search, Lewis fled the building and began cursing at school staff, at which time a school resource officer made contact with the student. When the school resource officer went to detain Lewis, he actively resisted and moments later the deputy was able to get him into custody. An investigation ensued and the resource officer learned that Lewis had a loaded firearm in his backpack. Upon a search of his backpack, marijuana was also discovered. Lewis was subsequently charged with Simple Possession of Marijuana, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds, Resisting Arrest and Public Disorderly Conduct. After conducting multiple interviews, School Enforcement Investigators have not found any evidence to indicate Lewis’ intent was to use the firearm at the school. Lewis was transported to the Greenville County Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
