In a short meeting Monday, Williamston Town Council approved second reading on the 2018 election ordinance, approved use of the Veterans Park for a scout campout and heard reports.
Miss Upstate Teen Rosalee Summerlin introduced herself to Council and volunteered to be involved with community outreach in her hometown of Willliamston.
Summerlin is a sophomore at Palmetto High School and her service platform, which provides a place for young women who can’t afford a prom dress to obtain one, is called the Rose project.
The platform is also based on a national platform by Tim Tebow which provides prom night experience for people with special needs with the help of local churches.
It is also a part of the Children’s Miracle Network and Greenville Hospital System.
Williamston Police Chief Tony Taylor reported that the department had 41 incident reports and answered 1666 calls for service.
Envision Williamston Executive Director Sonya Crandall reported that a landscaping project for three minor gateways and greenspaces will begin soon. The project is a major project for the Economic Development and Placemaking Committee and is being funded with a grant.
Crandall said the town’s 2018 Business Assistance Guide has been updated and printed copies will be available soon. An available property listing has also been updated.
The 2018 events schedule card and poster is also now available.
Crandall reported that EW is in the process of securing sites and will be preparing buildings for the mural beautification project. The three winners of the mural design were recently announced and Crandall said a fourth mural is being donated by a local artist and a private sponsor.
The EW Community Engagement and Marketing Committee is working on promotional events and materials.
Crandall said EW is looking at an interactive mobile app for information and events that will appeal to a younger audience.
The second Hands On Williamston Day Y’all (HOWDY) cleanup day is being planned for 8 a.m to 12 noon on April 28.
In the codes reports, Debbie Chapman reported that letters had been sent to owners of over 300 properties.
Three have been posted and twenty on re-check for ordinance issues. Several addresses for problem locations need correction.
Chapman said the lease of the armory for a 24 hour fitness center is still being negotiated with some requests for improvements by the town.
The town volunteer dinner is scheduled for April 10 at Town Hall.
In the official action of the evening, Council unanimously approved second reading on the 2018 election ordinance.
The town election will be held on Nov. 6 along with the general election and will be for the Town Council Ward One and Council Ward Two seats.
Books will open for filing at 12 p.m. on August 7 and remain open until 12 p.m. on August 21. The filing fee for the office of Council is $50.
Council also approved a request by Barry Sammons to allow a cub scouts campout in the Veterans Park April 13-14.
A resolution recognizing the national Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 was also approved.
The town will be conducting two budget work sessions. The first is scheduled for this Thursday, Apr. 5 and the second for Apr. 19, both at noon.
The Apr. 5 meeting may be rescheduled for Apr. 10 but that had not been confirmed as of press time.
