Piedmont man fatally injured – Hwy. 20

Piedmont firefighters work to extricate the driver of a sport utility vehicle Thursday evening following a collision in which one person was fatally injured.

John Edward Wood, 75, of Piedmont, was fatally injured in the accident on Highway 20 at the intersection of Oak Hill Drive near Piedmont.  According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, wood died on the scene.

According to SCHP, a 2004 GMC SUV was traveling east on Hwy. 20 around 6:17 p.m. when a 1997 Ford pickup driven by Wood, travelling westbound, crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, striking the SUV. The 81 year old driver of the SUV was injured and entrapped. He was wearing a seat belt. He was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

All lanes were blocked as a result of the collision. SCHP is not filing charges in this collision.
