Man wanted for Piedmont death now in custody

A Piedmont man wanted in connection with a death of a female whose body was found near the intersection of Old Pelzer Road and Piedmont Highway, has turned himself in.

The incident was initially investigated by the Highway Patrol as a car crash, however the Greenville County Coroner later determined the 21-year-old Greenville woman who was found at the scene died as a result of homicide instead of a crash.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation from Highway Patrol.

According to the Greenville County Sherriff’s Office, Deltravious Daquandra Howard, 20, of 313 Beech Island Drive, Piedmont, is accused of killing Jayla Thomas-Smith.
Investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants, and were asking the public’s help in finding Howard, who was considered armed and dangerous, in connection with the shooting death of Thomas-Smith. Howard turned himself in today, (Tuesday, Apr.24).
On February 24th, the body of Jayla Thomas-Smith was found alongside the road, near the intersection of Old Pelzer Road and Piedmont Highway. Investigator’s determined that she had been shot and killed by Howard following a domestic incident and Howard has been on the run since. Howard is facing charges of Murder, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime and Petit Larceny,
