The 2018/19 Palmetto Boat Center High School Tournament Trail will visit Lake Hartwell in Anderson, SC, on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Blast off will be approximately 6:40 am, and weigh in will begin at 1:30 pm for middle school / 3 pm for high school. The event will be held at the Green Pond Landing & Event Center, which is located at 470 Old Green Pond Road, Anderson, SC 29625. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
“We are expecting to continue breaking records in the local bass fishing world this weekend, even on the heels of Brandon Cobb’s incredible 72.4 lbs. caught during the Bassmaster Elite tournament held earlier this month at Green Pond Landing,” said Marty Walker, Tournament Director and owner of Palmetto Boat Center. Palmetto anticipates 225 boats, 450 students & over 200 volunteer captains. “This is the final [7th] tournament of the regular season for our student anglers, and the growth of the trail has simply been unimaginable. We are easily the largest tournament trail in the state of South Carolina. We want to continue that trend and secure a spot among the largest of student trails in the country.”
Participants will be competing for the heaviest five-bass limit and an array of prizes; including a $2,000 scholarship to the winning team. The top finishers of the season advance to Nationals for a chance to fish Kentucky Lake amongst the best student anglers in the country.
The event is sponsored by Palmetto Boat Center, Academy Sports & Outdoors, Shimano Fishing, Nitro Performance Bass Boats, Phoenix Bass Boats, Mercury Marine, Visit Anderson, Anderson County Parks & Recreation Department, and Pickens High School.
“These student anglers are the future of our sport and heritage,” said Walker. “We need more time with our kids’ tackle boxes and perhaps a little less with the Xbox. There is no substitute for time spent outdoors and memories that are created on the water. It is simply amazing how much catching a little green fish will make a young person smile. But, make no mistake, these kids are competitors looking for the biggest bag they can!”
The Palmetto Boat Center High School Tournament Trail was established in the fall of 2015 to create a large-scale competitive environment for the high school fishing teams and clubs in South Carolina, filling the need for central coordination and operation of youth tournaments. In its first full season of seven tournaments, each event averaged 125 boats from over 25 high schools in South Carolina. Now in its fourth season, the trail still consists of seven regular season tournaments, three in the fall and three in the spring; however, a middle school division has been introduced to encourage participation from younger competitors. Over 350 teams from 65 schools compete for points in each tournament to determine the Anglers of the Year and the School of the Year. The top teams from each school also have the opportunity to qualify for the end of season two-day Classic Invitational on Lake Keowee, May 10th & 11th, 2019. Passionate fans and spectators are welcome to attend each event.
The seven regular season events are sanctioned tournaments by South Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation, as qualifying points events towards the BASS Nation High School National Championship. (http://www.scbassfed.org/)
