Investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) have arrested three suspects connected to the 2014 shooting death of Marquail Marvista Hellams in Piedmont. Kris Thomas Capatino (46), Destany Maria Fields (26) and Rahiem Jarrard Griffin (28) were all arrested last week and are currently in the Greenville County Detention Center on no bond.
Investigators within the Sheriff’s Office cold case unit began looking into this case within the past year and were able to substantiate information brought forth through Crime Stoppers with forensic evidence gathered through advancements in technology.
During the course of the investigation, investigators learned that on January 31, 2014 Griffin, Fields and Hellams met up with Capatino under the victim’s presumption that they were going to purchase narcotics. Ultimately the parties got into a vehicle with Capatino as they drove to a gravel road off of Davis Road, in Piedmont. Once there, the suspects carried out the act they conspired to commit by shooting Hellams outside of the vehicle. Investigators believe that there had been previous conflicts between the roommates (Hellams, Griffin and Fields), which investigators believe may have motivated the shooting.
Sheriff Hobart Lewis said, “I am so proud of the hard work put forth by our investigators as they have worked diligently to bring resolution to this case and other cases alike. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the family of Mr. Hellams and my desire is to see justice served for Marquail and every other victim who was tragically killed and whose case has gone unsolved. Our team of investigators will continue their mission to evaluate each and every one of these cold cases in hopes of an eventual resolve.”
This is now the third cold case that has been solved by Investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office since August 2020 (Cecil Morris, April Deboy, Marquail Hellams).
• Capatino is charged with Murder and Criminal Conspiracy• Fields is charged with Murder and Criminal Conspiracy• Griffin in charged with Murder, Criminal Conspiracy and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime.
