The Anderson County Fire Protection Commission presented their budget proposal to the Anderson County Legislative Delegation recently. The budget, based on the special tax levy of 6.77 mills, anticipated revenues of $4,516,553. Also anticipating lower revenues in the early months of the budget year, the Commission will set aside $212,455 for operations. Also reflected is a rolling fund balance of $1.5 million, for a total budget of $6,229,008.
There are twenty seven fire departments, comprising 800 volunteer firefighters under the Commission’s direct oversight. There are also four substations, bringing the total number of facilities/units to thirty one. Each of the twenty seven departments receives a $25,000 allowance, while each substation receives $2500. There are several municipalities, such as Anderson, Williamston, and others that maintain their own fire departments, and do not come under the fire commission’s authority.
The Commission also provides support for Anderson County HazMat, the technical rescue team, the fire service training facility and the Anderson County Fire Chief’s Association.
