The recent death of former Palmetto High teacher and clergyman Dale Harper has brought a number of comments and letters from our readers. One reader has brought to our attention that in his obituary, it was stated that Mr. Harper was the Valedictorian of his graduation class. However, according to this former classmate, and a copy of the graduation program, Harper was the Salutatorian of the PHS Class of 1956. George Martin was Valedictorian of the Class.
Harper, as a student, had the honor of naming the newly constructed school, Palmetto High, as the winner in a contest held to name the school.
After attending Erskine College, Harper returned to Palmetto High to teach history, making an impact on scores of students through the years.
