The first case of COVID-19 in South Carolina was reported March 6, 2020.

According to SCDHEC, there have been 57,172 breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in the state of South Carolina. Of those, 3,618 were hospitalized and there were 896 reported breakthrough case deaths.

In public health, a “breakthrough case” is when a fully vaccinated person later gets the disease they were vaccinated for. No vaccine provides 100 percent protection against infection, so breakthrough cases are not new, and not unique, to COVID-19.
