First graders at Spearman Elementary School participated in creative and exciting activities that brought Social Studies standards to life. As a part of their study of American democracy, customs, and traditions, the first graders learned about why the Pilgrims came to America and how Thanksgiving began. On Tuesday, the students dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans to reenact the first Thanksgiving feast. In addition, they performed a program for their parents which included a Thanksgiving play, poems, and songs. Memories of this special time will help the students to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
