In a time where you hear bad news every day, it is a pleasure to get to write about a selfless nine year old girl. She has also been very active with participating in outreach programs at High Praises Church. And her father, Alan, said “she thinks about others before herself” and this year is no different.

Who is this little girl, Alaina Dawson, who while at school noticed a schoolmate wearing flip flops in cold weather. She asked the girl why she wasn’t wearing warm shoes. The schoolmate told her that she only had two pairs of flip flops because her mother could not afford shoes. Shortly thereafter, her parents took her to buy a new pair of shoes and Alaina refused because she knew that her school mate needed shoes. Alaina was watching a program on the Disney Channel that gave her an idea of having people donate shoes. That very same evening Alaina said “God told her to do it” to get shoes for the less fortunate.

With her birthday coming up her mother, Jessica Dawson, asked Alaina what kind of birthday party she wanted this year. Much to her surprise, Alaina said she did not want everyone to bring her presents. Instead she wanted shoes to be brought for the less fortunate and orphans. Alaina said she would like to reach a goal of 1000 pairs of shoes. But her mother “does not want to put a box on God.” She knows he will provide what is needed.

Alaina’s 10th birthday party is this Saturday, January 21st from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the gym located in the Williamston Municipal Center. The Town of Williamston allowed the party to be held there, Alaina’s mother said. There will be games for the kids attending the party such as putt-putt, ring toss, corn hole and the kids will be making Valentine’s Day Cards for children in orphanages. The public is welcome at Alaina’s party and to donate a pair of new or gently used shoes for those less fortunate.
