Kani Garren, a fifth grade teacher at Fork Shoals School, Jessica Austin, a fourth grade teacher at Buena Vista Elementary; Kelly Hunt, a fourth grade teacher at Brook Glenn Elementary were selected to participate in the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey in July.

These educators are among 200 highly-qualified third-through-fifth grade teachers from across the nation selected to attend the intensive, one-week all-expense paid professional development program. A panel of educators from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Science Teachers Association selected them based on their qualifications, dedication to inspiring students at an early age, and their overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.

During the academy, teachers discover new ways to excite students using experiments that demonstrate various math and science concepts including force, gravity, and probability. The Academy curriculum works to deepen teachers’ understanding of these principles by conducting hands-on experiments that they can later share with students in the classroom
