Record low temperatures, which plummeted into the single digits Monday night, before rebounding slightly into the low teens Tuesday night, led county officials to open the Anderson County Sports and Entertainment Center as a shelter for those at risk from the cold. Red Cross volunteers as well as several county employees from the Emergency Preparedness Division manned the civic center, where cots were set up and hot meals available. Seventeen people stayed at the shelter Monday night, while twenty six spent the night Tuesday. Six pets were also sheltered.
