Mr. Bobby Higgins, longtime member of the Piedmont Fire Department and member of the Piedmnt Public Service District (PPSD) Board of Commissioners, lost a long battle with cancer, passing away on Tuesday, February 17. PFD Chief Tracy Wallace said that he and Higgins began working at the department at the same time, in 1981. Higgins was a volunteer firefighter before that, said Wallace. “They brought us on to man Station Number Two when it was built. Bobby served for 22 years, retiring in March of 2003. He was a firefighter’s firefighter, always working to make the department better. He had a special heart for this place.”

Ironically, Higgins joined the Commission in 2011, after winning the seat vacated by the death of Bobby Stover, who also succumbed to cancer.

Wallace said that funeral arrangements haven’t been firmed up yet, but Higgins had requested to be buried in his firefighter dress uniform. Wallace said the Greenville County Fire Chief’s Honor Guard will be on hand. “We will do what we need to do to honor Bobby Higgins properly. This department was his life in many ways, and we will miss him very much.”
