A public meeting will be held tonight (Dec. 9) at 6 pm at the Pelzer Community Building regarding a Brownfields Cleanup Grant application for the old Pelzer Mills dump site located on the banks of the Saluda River. Community input is an integral part of brownfields cleanup. Public and community-based organizations are encouraged to review the draft grant applications and ABCAs and provide comments.
Interested community-based organizations and individuals interested in seeing the properties cleaned up are encouraged to attend the meeting. The site includes two parcels, 16.85-acres and 11.80-acres, located at Parker and Frost Streets at the former Upper Mill property in Pelzer.
Brownfields are designated as property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
The Pelzer Heritage Commission (PHC) is submitting two Brownfields Cleanup Grant Applications to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct cleanup activities at the site now known as the Pelzer Mill Disposal Areas.
The grant amounts being requested is $400,000 ($200,000) for each parcel. PHC will request a waiver to the match of $40,000 per grant. If funded, the grant will be used for cleanup work and community outreach.
The cleanup work will be performed in accordance with one of the alternatives outlined in an Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA).
The meeting will be followed by a Pelzer crimewatch meeting.
