DEBRA ANN HOPKINS WHITAKER

Debra Ann Hopkins Whitaker, of Piedmont, wife of Roger Whitaker, died Sunday, January 4, 2015.

Born in Anderson she was a daugher of Betty Hopkins and the late Chester Peek Hopkins, Sr.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughers, Melissa McKittrick and Jennifer Wham; two step-daughters, Kendra Whitaker and Tanya Medlin; two brothers, Chester Hopkins, Jr. and Dennis Hopkins; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday, January 9 in the Northwest Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MARGARET JANE SUMMERELL

Margaret Jane South Summerell, 82, of Easley, wife of the late Harvey L. Summerell, died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at her home.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Louie and Ruth Hudson South.

She was a homemaker and a member of United Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are a son, Troy Summerell of Piedmont; three daughters, Hazel Patterson, Ardona Summerell and Anna Cison, all of Easley; sister, Pearl Brown of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

BETTY HAIGLER

Betty Haigler, 48, of Greenville, died Friday, January 2, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital Downtown.

Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Frances Haigler and Nathaniel Shell, Sr.

Surviving in addition to her father are a daughter, LaShunn Haigler of Greenville; son, Kyle Haigler of Williamston; sisters, Gretchen Watson of Virginia, Dessie Wright of Alaska, Shenay Shell of Greenville; brothers, Charles Haigler and Nathaniel Shell, Jr., both of Greenville, and Joseph Beck of Virginia; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Saturday, January 10 at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

FLOYD COTHRAN

PELZER – Floyd Andrew Cothran, 90, husband of 67 years to Amelia Melton Cothran, passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Christie Franklin and Eunice Uldrick Cothran. He was a service manager for Fairway Ford in Greenville and retired as service manager for C.W. Murphy Ford in Honea Path. Mr. Cothran was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII.

A graduate of Williamston High School, he loved gardening and selling flowers and vegetables at the Greenville Farmers Market. He was a member of Washington Baptist Church where he had served as a church greeter.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Cynthia Cothran Storer (Steve) of Greenwood; grandsons, Christopher (Lindsay) Storer and Stephen (Brittany) Storer; two great-grandchildren, Wells Gunter and Amelia Storer; special friends, Herbert and Raymond Box.

He was predeceased by brothers, Frank and Christie Cothran; sister, Thelma C. Trammell.

Visitation was held from 5 – 7 p.m. Saturday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Washington Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

TRUDY PRINCE

Gertrude Autry “Trudy” Prince, 79, of Easley, wife of Frank R. Prince, died January 10, 2015.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Beauford Crawford Autry. She was employed with Meyers Arnold, and was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include son, Michael Prince of Munich, Germany; brothers, J.W. Autry  of Greenville, and Don Autry of Williamston; and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday, January 13 at Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.

JOHN F. RICE

John Franklin Rice, 81, widower of Bobbie Talent Rice, formerly of Powdersville, died Thursday, January 8, 2015.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Judson and Mae Batson Rice.

Surviving are one daughter, Crystal Price; one brother, Earl Rice; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services were held Saturday at Enoree Baptist Church Cemetery.

SHIRLEY ANN CHAPMAN

Shirley Chapman, 62, of Honea Path, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at her home.

Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Mamie Watley Chapman.

Surviving are daughter, Kimberly Frazier of Pelzer; sister, Dorothy Earle of Piedmont; brothers, Calvin Chapman of Simpsonville, Charles Chapman, Curtis Chapman, Bobby Chapman, all of Piedmont; and Johnny Ray Chapman of Pelzer; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Monday at Reedy Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MARTHA RIDGEWAY

WILLIAMSTON – Martha Murrell Ridgeway, 70, wife of James Ridgeway, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at her home.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Perry and Ruby Taylor Murrell.  She was retired from J.P. Stevens and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are sons, Alan Ridgeway of Piedmont, William Pearson (April) of Anderson; daughter, Angela Gossman (Michael) of Pelzer; grandchildren, Alexander and Olivia Pearson, Mikaila and Wade Gossman,; sisters, Mildred Edmonds of Lexington and Kay Jewell of Easley; mother-in-law, Lois Ridgeway of Williamston and her furry friends, Clark, Tigger, and Squeaky.

She was predeceased by brothers, Larry and David Murrell; sister, Barbara Traynham.

Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The funeral service will follow at 11 in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MARY TUCKER McPHAIL

ANDERSON – Mary Lillian Tucker McPhail, 82, widow of Donald Bellinger McPhail, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Anderson Place Nursing Center.

Born December 17, 1932 in Williamston, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Mary Sue Brown Tucker. She was a graduate of Pelzer-Williamston High School where she was captain of the basketball team, President of the senior class and Valedictorian. She was a graduate of Erskine College and received her Master’s degree from Clemson University. Mrs. McPhail was a retired teacher and a life member of the S.C. Education Association. She was past state President of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Hudson Berry chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Anderson County Woman’s Club. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a former member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, David deJarnette Tucker IV of Rural Hall, NC; nieces and nephews, Harriette Jane Tucker, Harrison Tucker III, Ida Sue Elrod, and Ann Elrod                      Mihalik, all of Williamston, Robert F. Elrod, Jr. of Franklin, TN, Mary Catherine Tucker of Terre Haute, IN and Michael Tucker of Idaho.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harrison Tucker, Jr. and a sister, Harriette Tucker Elrod.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Evan M. Hill. Burial followed in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

BILL WILDER

William “Bill” Royal Wilder, 89, of Piedmont, died Monday, January 12, 2015.

Born in Ila, Georgia, he was a son of the late Seaborn L. and Evelyn Hooper Wilder. He retired from J.P. Stevens Estes Plant.

Survivors include brother, Jack Wilder of Piedmont and sisters, Katie Ivester of Commerce, GA and Georgia Sue Armisted of Lexington.

The funeral service was held Wednesday at the funeral home chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

LUCILLE TRIBBLE

Lucille “Cile” Weaver Tribble, 79, of Taylors, wife of William “Bill” Carl Tribble, died January 12, 2015.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late George Luther and Ann Brown Weaver. She was a homemaker and member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Greer.

Additional survivors include daughters, Kim Phillips of Charleston, Robin McCarthy of Orange Park, FL and Heidi Christopher of Evans, GA; sister, Vera Nell Harris of Anderson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 15, at The Chapel of Beulah Cemetery, 6224 Highway 81, Pelzer, SC.

DAPHNE TAYLOR

Daphne Hair Taylor, 96, of Anderson, died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at NHC Anderson.

Born in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Lee Hair Sr. and Gladys Lorraine O’Kelly Hair.

She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, James R. “Jim” Taylor of Anderson; two daughters, Faye Stovall of Anderson and Bobbie Jean Watt of Williamston; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William H. Taylor.

Graveside service was held Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

HELEN REYNOLDS

Helen Reynolds, 88, of Spartanburg, died January 12, 2015.

Born in Pisgah Forest, NC, she was daughter of the late Buford and Florence Mulenex.

She retired from Woven Electronics in Simpsonville.

Surviving are four children, Sarah Ann Wilson of Maryville, TN, John Wayne Reynolds of Simpsonville, and Brenda Joyce Reynolds of Piedmont; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, January 16 at Fernwood Baptist Church in Spartanburg. Funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.

Graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. at Davidson River Cemetery, Pisgah Forest, NC.

WADE HAMPTON ELROD

Wade Hampton Elrod, 89, of Greenville, died Monday, January 12, 2015 at Rainey Hospice House.

Born in the Piercetown Community, he was the son of the late Waymon Frederick Elrod and Mamie Campbell Elrod.

He was a U.S. Army veteran  of World War II. He retired from the South Carolina Highway Patrol and was a member of West Gantt Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Maggie Pearl Elrod of Williamston.

He was predeceased by his wife, Luree Stanley Elrod.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, January 15 at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Family will receive friends Thursday from 10 – 11 a.m. at the cemetery.
