More than 1000 people and firefighters from around the county attended the funeral for Sandy Springs fire fighter Kenneth Stanton last Thursday. Stanton, 52, was hit by a car as he directed traffic around a wreck on Hwy. 76 last Sunday (Feb. 15) night. The driver of the car, Charles Pickens, 64, of Pendleton was charged with driving under the influence in an accident that caused death and with leaving the scene. Funeral services for Stanton were held in the Anderson Civic Center. The funeral procession, with as many as 80 fire trucks from Charlotte, Charleston and throughout the upstate, traveled to M. J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery, for burial. Stanton was a former Marine sergeant and worked in support services at Clemson University.
