For Second Reading on Annexation

Williamston Town Council will hold a special called meeting at the Hilton Head Marriott, One Hotel Circle in Hilton Head SC at 11:15 a.m. on Friday July 17 to hold second reading on the ribbon annexation being pursued by the town. Town Attorney Lee Cole and Town Clerk Michelle Starnes will be in Williamston and included via a phone conference call.

Members of Williamston Town Council and the Mayor, making up a quorum required to hold a meeting and take a vote, are attending the state meeting of the South Carolina Municipal Association (SCMA) being held in Hilton Head this week. The special called meeting will be held in a conference room at the hotel. Councilman Otis Scott is not attending the SCMA meeting in Hilton Head but said he will be at Town Hall when the meeting is held via the conference call.

If the proposed Williamston ribbon annexation is approved and stands, it wil preempt a meeting of Pelzer Town Council scheduled for Monday to hold second reading on Pelzer’s Annexation Ordinance. By doing so, the ribbon annexation will cut the area being annexed by Pelzer in half, excluding 13 properties along Hwy. 20 between Williamston and Pelzer and other properties located  between Depot Road and Hwy. 20.

Williamston Mayor Mack Durham said he believes the ribbon annexation is in the best interest of Williamston and future growth of the area.
