Walmart coming?

By David Meade

Williamston Mayor Mack Durham announced Tuesday night that Williamston may in fact be getting a Walmart store. Durham made the announcement during a meeting of the Envision Williamston Board of Directors and posted the following statement on the Envision Williamston Facebook page:

“I have just received a call confirming that a judgement decision has been made in favor of local property owners involved in the Walmart development project. This should mean that Walmart will be coming to Williamston! See the Journal for more details on this important local project.”

The Journal is working to confirm that a Walmart store will be coming to Williamston.

According to sources close to the unofficially announced project, a legal issue involving one of the property owners where the rumored Walmart will locate and Fred’s Discout store has been the holdup on the project. That issue has recently been settled.

This is apparently what Mayor Durham is confirming on the town’s Envision Facebook page.

Walmart and other officials have declined to confirm that a Walmart store is locating in Williamston over the two year period since rumors began circulation that a “big box store” was coming to properties located on Roberts Boulevard and Hwy. 20. To date there are no court documents showing the four properties have been sold or purchased by Walmart.

However, during the last two years there have been signs that a project is in the works.

A similar situation occurred in Honea Path approximately two years ago in which an announced Walmart deal fell through at the last minute.
