Military Convoy coming through Williamston today

A convoy of 65 military vehicles will be coming through Williamston today (Wednesday) at part of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association re-enactment of a 1920 convoy of military vehicles that made the trip from Washington DC to SanDiego in 1920.

The 3,300 mile trip took 116 days to complete. The re-enactment began in Washington on Saturday and is expected to take about 29 days this time.

The convoy is scheduled to leave at stop in South Greenville around at 3 p.m. and proceed on Highway 20 to Pelzer and West Pelzer then through Williamston. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office will escort the convoy from the county line in Pelzer.

From Williamston it will go to Hwy. 29, through Anderson, and stop at the balloon launch field near the Civic Center of Anderson. On Thursday, the convoy will travel south on US Hwy. 29 to Atlanta as it did in 1920.

The original exercise was performed shortly after World War I to furthur the Army’s understanding of the practicality of motorized transport.

The re-enactment will include motorcycles, jeeps and large transport trucks from WWI to some just released from Armed Forces investories.
