Firefighters work at the scene of a fatal accident Thursday morning on Southbond I-85 at mile marker 28 involving an 18 wheeler and van in which the van caught fire. The driver of the van died in the accident. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. and blocked lanes for four hours causing traffic to back up past the Hwy. 8 exit. Southbound I-85 was reopened by 11 a.m. Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the accident occurred as traffic was slowing down due to an earlier accident and the van apparently swerved in front of the truck. Piercetown Fire Department and Medshore Ambulance Service responded. The incident remains under investigation.
