Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore (left) and Deputy County Coroner Don McCown at the scene in Powdersville where skeletal remains were found Sunday. According to Coroner Shore, the skeletal remain found in a wooded area in the Powdersville area are those of a 46-year-old Greenville County man who has been missing since May. The man was identified as Gary Calvin Burton from the serial number on an implanted heart defibrillator, according to Shore. According to reports, the man’s wife had been notified mid-day Monday.

The missing man was last seen May 29, the day after the defibrillator was implanted. The man’s home is about 2 miles from the site where his bones were found, Shore said. The cause of the man’s death is still under investigation.

A man riding a four-wheeler discovered the bones late Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near River and McNeely Roads. Investigators searched of the area until around 8 p.m. Sunday when the search was called off. Sheriff’s Deputies returned Monday and were conducted a methodical grid search of the wooded area. The bones appeared to have been dispersed in the woods by animals, according to Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown.
