WILLIE MAE HESTER

WEST PELZER – Willie Mae Tinsley Hester, 102, of 8 Tasha Drive, died Monday, March 7, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Raymond J. Hester, Sr.

Born in Liberty Township on May 30, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mamie Tinsley. She was a devoted wife and often cared for young children (Teri Cox Gilstrap, Melissa Campbell Broome, and Peyton Tice Holbert) in her home while their parents worked. She was a member of the Mother’s Class of Whitefield Baptist Church where she also served as their teacher for many years. She was a devoted prayer warrior who prayed for family, pastors, neighbors, and others daily.

She is survived by three siblings of thirteen, Leona Dill of Taylors, Elizabeth Ford of Williamston, and Neal Tinsley of Easley. Her children include daughter, Joe Ann Hester of St. Louis, MO, daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Carl Yates of Piedmont, son and daughter-in-law, Lyles and Sandra Hester of Blairsville, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Darlene Hester of Williamston; eleven grandchildren, Rev. Walter Blackman, Debi Schultz, Dianne McJunkin, Gene Yates, Joel Yates, Myra Bullions, Dr. Jennifer Tribbey, Almeda Andrew, Steven Hester, Lynlee Thompson, Matthew Hester; twenty-four great-grandchildren, Scott, Brett, and Melissa Knueven, Kaitlyn, Samuel, Paul, and Alex Schultz, Steven and Lauren Yates, Natalie and Alex Tribbey, Carlton and Caitlyn McJunkin, Joshua, Alyson and Caleb Blackman, Jamie Wallace, Sarah and Kelly Andrew, Raymond Bullions, James and Luke Thompson, Jude Hester, Adalynn Hester; four, great-great-grandchildren, Tinsley and Marley Wallace, Cooper and Camden Knueven.

Visitation was held from 1:00 to 2:30 pm Saturday, March 12 at Whitefield Baptist Church (Hwy. 29, Belton).

The funeral service was at 2:30 pm in the church with the Rev. Walter Blackman, Rev. Jim McNiel, and Rev. Bob Clardy officiating.

Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home.

JUSTIN K. SAMUELS

Justin K. Samuels, 29, of Piedmont, son of Richard and Janice Samuels, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 12 in the Main Worship Center of Calvary Baptist Church, Simpsonville.

HAROLD ANDREW KELLY, SR.

Harold Andrew Kelly, Sr., 85, of Greenville, husband of Gloria Herron Kelly, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

Born in Pelzer, he was the son of the late James Walter Kelly, Sr. and Ruth Norris Kelly.

He retired from Bi-Lo, Inc. and was a member of Eastlan Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Elizabeth Kelly; son, Harold A. Kelly, Jr.; and three grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral service was held Friday, March 11 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.

JOYCE GARNER

WILLIAMSTON – Barbara Joyce James Garner, 73, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Elisha and Lula Mae Knight James. She was formerly employed with Mitchell Manufacturing in Honea Path and a member of Life Journey Church.

She is survived by son, Rick Sanders (Denise) of West Pelzer; daughter, Barbara Mahaffey (John) of Lancaster; sister, Margaret West of York; brother, R.C. James (Mildred) of Williamston; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 19 at Life Journey Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Life Journey Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 9, Pelzer, SC 29669.

BETTY EDENS

Betty Ann Christie Edens, 81, of Pelzer, wife of the late Roy Edens, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Docia Hartman Christie.

She is survived by sons, Daniel Edens of Pelzer and David Edens of Glendale, AZ; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Monday, March 14 at Pelzer First Baptist Church.

MARVIN ROGERS

Marvin Floyd Rogers, 88, of Williamston, widower of Sara Agnes Holliday Rogers, died Friday, March 11, 2016.

Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Ira and Gladys Stringer Rogers. A Korean War, Army Veteran, he was retired from Bigelow Sanford and AnMed Health, and was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Deborah Sue Burretto of Greenville, Janet R. Gambrell of Williamston; sisters, Sarah Rogers, Thelma McCall, both of Williamston; one grandson; one great-grandchild; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Saturday, March 12 at Gray Mortuary.

A celebration of life was Sunday, March 13 at Whitefield Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

GLORIA GREEN

Gloria Dean Phillips Green, 70, of Greenville, widow of Kenneth O’Neal Green, Sr., died Thursday, March 10, 2016.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Troy Glen Phillips and Nellie Ruth Duvall Phillips Coker. She was retired from Milliken and was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.

Survivors include son, Kenneth O. Green, Jr. of Pelzer; twin sister, Loria Gilstrap of Piedmont; sister Rebecca Geddings of Winnsboro; brother, Wayne Phillips of Iva; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Visitation was held Monday, March 14 at Gray Mortuary.

The funeral was Tuesday, March 15, in the mortuary chapel. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

BETTY VAUGHN

PIEDMONT – Betty Lou Lee Vaughn, 82, wife of Billie G. Vaughn, went to heaven on Friday, March 11, 2016.

Born in Piedmont on February 22, 1934, she was a daughter of the late James P. Lee, Sr. and Helen Greene Lee. She was retired from Miliken Judson Plant. After retirement she was owner and operator of B&B Van Seats.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Betty never met a stranger, loved fishing and western shows.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Carol Ann Gillespie (Irby) of Piedmont; son, Gary Lynn Sawyers (Donna) of Houston, TX; brother, James P. Lee Jr. of Pelzer; sister, Alyce L. Taylor of Piedmont; grandchildren, Walter Gillespie, Jeremy and Brandon Sawyers; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Haley, Hunter and Aiden; special grandchildren, Taylor and Niki.

She was predeceased by sister, Mary Sue Lee; brother, William Eugene Lee.

Visitation was from 12:30 to 2:00 pm Monday, March 14 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

The service followed at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.

Burial was held at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MARIAN SATTERFIELD

Marian “Mackey” Haltiwanger Satterfield, 75, of Hodges, widow of Donald D. Satterfield, died March 12, 2016.

Surviving are sons, Keith Satterfield of Greenwood and Chris Satterfield of Powdersville; daughter, Kim Satterfield-Fant of Boiling Springs; four brothers; and a granddaughter.

Funeral service was held Tuesday at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood.

DONNA EVANS

Donna Christine Kenzler Bridges Evans, 64, of Honea Path, died March 10, 2016.

Born in Hannibal, MO, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Kenzler and Gertie Kenzler Smith.

She was predeceased by her first husbsand, Jimmy Ray Bridges, and second husband, Ronald Boyd Evans.

Surviving are siblings, Ruth Ann Kenzler Carlson of Alamo, TX, Freddie Kenzler of Anderson, Carol Kenzler Stewart of New London, MO, Patty Kenzler McMahan of Honea Path; daughters, Kat Bridges Sullivan of Williamston, Edna Ruth Bridges McDaniel of the home; and Rhonda Evans Porter of Clinton; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She retired from Electrolux in Anderson and was a member of Austin Road Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12 at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel.

JOHN THOMAS TURNER

John Thomas Turner, 88, of Pelzer, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 12, 2016.

He was born on October 23, 1927 and was a member of Eastview Baptist Church in Pelzer.

He retired from Michelin and was an ordained minister.

In addition to his wife, Mary Leslie Turner, he is survived by two sons, John Wayne Turner of Piedmont, Danny Turner of Williamston; daughter, Tammy Rogers of the home; and a brother, Ed Turner of Virginia; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be held at a later date.

The family is at the home, 239 Eastview Road, Pelzer, SC 29669.

MILDRED ‘GRANNY’ BRIDGES

Mildred “Granny” Duncan Bridges, 101, of Anderson, died Monday, March 14, 2016 at her home.

Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late Gary Duncan and the late Thursie Hayes Duncan, and was the widow of Cansel Bridges.

She retired from George’s Drive-In and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by a son, Joe Bridges of Pendleton; three daughters, Julie Church of San Antonio, TX, Mary Hammonds of Anderson, and Sara Osborne of Anderson; two grandchildren raised in the home, Gail and Mel Bridges; 23 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery.
