The SC Department of Transportation )SCDOT) announced at 9:50 a.m. this morning (Friday) that the SC Highway Patrol is in the process of clearing the reversed, eastbound lanes on I-26. NO traffic will be allowed on the eastbound lanes until the clearing is complete from Charleston to Columbia, officials said. The westbound lanes of I-26 remain open in that direction for travel to Columbia.  Evacuation from the Charleston area is available and encouraged.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), in conjunction with DPS, SLED, DNR, and National Guard, are in theprocess of removing the lane reversal on I-26.

The process for returning I-26 to normal operations has begun by law enforcement stopping traffic from entering the reversed lanes at I-526 in Charleston. DPS will begin the process of removing traffic control points on I-26 EB from Charleston to Columbia. Once the traffic control points have been removed and a final check has been performed, all lanes will return to normal operations. This process could take three hours or more.

Westbound I-26 will remain open during this operation, except for intermittent closures.

All motorists evacuating the coastal area are strongly encouraged to leave prior to the time as SCDOT, DPS, SLED, DNR, and National Guard personnel will be returning to their office quarters until the storm has passed.
