Anderson County Public Works Department reported the following projects underway around the county:
Building and Codes
    Department Manager attended the annual Building Officials Association of South Carolina Educational Conference. This gives us a chance to network with other counties in dealing with various code related issues as well as get continuing educational credits to be used towards renewing our certifications. The Manager was also elected to serve on the Board of Directors to represent the Tri-County Building Codes Association.
PERMITS SUBMITTED: 24 New Single-Family Dwelling and 5 Addition-Renovation; 3 Detached Garage/Accessory Building; 1 Swimming Pool; 4 Demolition; 2 Renewal; 17 for Electrical and HVAC Upgrades; 6 Commercial Including: Milliken Building Re-Roof, Sign for Discount Bark, Electrical Meter Base replacement for Mt. Olive Pentecostal Ministries, Re-Roof for Applied Industrial Tech, First Quality-Cannonball 4 Structural Steel for Machine #5, First Quality-Cannonball 4 Concrete for Machine #5; 8 Mobile Home including: New Homes, Change of Ownership, moves from other counties, change of location, etc.

Development Standards
    MEETINGS HELD:
Board of Zoning Appeals met on Thursday-May 11th and approved five (5) variances to allow for replacements of single wide, double wide or modular homes.
Special Exceptions; Freedom Fences, Gospel Light Church, and Upstate Church of Christ approved to allow for expansion. All requests were approved by unanimous vote.
    UPCOMING MEETINGS:
Planning Commission will review two subdivision applications at their June meeting to include the following;
Subdivision Application for Smith Road Townhomes (32) units located just south of I-85/Clemson Highway end of Mill Road.
Subdivision Application for 206 residential lots located in Powdersville northwest of highway 153. Phase I will consist of 99 lots and Phase II, 72 lots, and Phase III, 35 lots.
    SITE PLAN REVIEW:
TTI Outdoor Testing Laboratory located on Ryobi Drive.
McCullough Mini Storage located on Highway 81S and Liberty Road.
Anderson Storage Facility (Beltine) located at 205 East West Parkway, Anderson.
Floodplain Development Permit for 130 Mt. View Road for mobile home.

Bottoms Ups bar & Tavern located at 5915 Highway 76, Pendleton.

Roads & Bridges
    10 vacancies: (1) Manager, (3) Truck Drivers, (3) Equipment Operators, (2) Mower Operators, (1) Laborer.
Bridge Crew repaired chain link fence at the Michelin Blvd. facility.
Grading Crew performed gravel road maintenance.
Drainage Crew ditched in the Hwy 81N area and installed pipes in Homeland Park.
Vegetation Crew continued to remove trees and mow in all seven areas of the County.
Asphalt Crews completed driveway aprons and pot holes throughout the County.
On-call crew received 4 calls, 2 were down trees and 2 stop signs totaling 8 hours.
Stormwater
    Second review was conducted for Ingles #73 – Powdersville.
Wastewater
    ROW crew cut Pheasant Ridge, Salem Church Road and Clemson Blvd.
Assisted the Town of Iva in smoke testing their sewer lines to find inflow and infiltration problems with the line. During rain events there is an increase in the flow to their sewer system.
Reviewed as-built submittal for Rivermill subdivision.
Performed 6 residential sewer tap inspections this week: 2 in the Rivendell subdivision, 1 in Winding Stream, 1 in Benton Park, 1 in Covered Bridge and 1 in The Oaks @ Shiloh.
Inspected all manholes in Rivermill subdivision and claimed as assets in Cartegraph.
Met with engineers and contractor for pre-construction meeting on the Betsy Tucker gravity sewer.
Animal Shelter
    1 Adoption Lead position open, 3 full time Animal Caretaker positions open, 4 part time Animal Caretaker positions open and a part time maintenance position open.
   PAWS took in 100 animals total this week (9 owner surrender, 1 return, 78 from animal control, 12 strays).
Had 38 adoptions, 2 animals died, 8 euthanasia (4 owner requested), 13 animals returned to their owner, 46 transferred to rescues.
Donations: $935.68 cash.
St. Huberts sponsored Dr. Sanders’ attendance to the Animal Care Expo held in Fort Lauderdale, May 9-12, 2017.  This Expo shares new skills and strategies to find pets homes, keep pets in their current homes, and ways to engage our community.  This is the premier conference for our field and we greatly appreciate St. Huberts and all they have done to help us in our efforts.
Sonja Hargraves was awarded the Modern Woodman of America volunteer certificate for all of her efforts at the shelter.  She has spent countless hours researching various volunteer programs for our facility and has started implementing several of them already.  She has headed up our volunteer program for several months all on a volunteer basis herself.
Starting May 13, 2017, we will be extending our hours until 6pm on Saturdays.
