JENNY COOLEY

BELTON – Jenny Lynn Brown Cooley, 56, wife of Stanley Brian Cooley, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Wanda Brooks Brown Vest and the late Doc Anthony Brown.  She was a caretaker and member of Williamston Pentecostal Holiness Church where she loved serving the Lord and working with the youth while she was able.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Jody Cooley Patterson and husband, Steven of the home; step-father, Boyce Vest of Williamston; step-mother, Linda Brown of Pilot Mountain, NC; grandchildren, Destany and Kaitlyn Patterson; five step-brothers, Stevie Flynchum, Donald Redd, Todd, Kevin and Christopher Vest.

She was predeceased by brothers, James Anthony and Frankie Ray Brown.

Visitation was held from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

A graveside service followed at 4:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

KAY RODGERS

PELZER – Patricia Kay Belk Rodgers, 62, wife of Tony Harold Rodgers, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Merley C. Belk, Sr. and Sara Ethel Thornhill Belk.

In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by daughters, Samantha K. Burgess (Tony) of Greenwood, IN and Sharon Ann Smith Vinson (Tony) of Pelzer; brothers, Mickey Belk of GA, Danny and Tommy Belk, both of Williamston and Robert Belk of Mauldin; grandchildren, Tyler, Seth, Lauren, MaKay-Leigh and Alyssa Burgess, Carter and Thomas Vinson; great-grandchild, Breelynne.

She was predeceased by grandson, Hunter Vinson.

Visitation was from 1:00 to 2:30 pm Saturday, May 13, at Grove Station Baptist Church. The service followed at 2:30 pm in the church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The pallbearers were grandsons and sons-in-law.

The family was at the home.

LARRY LEAPHART

PIEDMONT – Larry James Leaphart, 70, husband of Sandra Cox Leaphart, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at his home.

Born in Lexington, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Eldora Lee Leaphart.  He was owner of Larry’s Body Shop in Piedmont and a member of the National Guard.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, David Leaphart (Pam) and Doug Leaphart , all of Piedmont; sister, Pat Bruce of Piedmont; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the service following at 4 p.m.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

MARY JANE CLEVELAND MCCARTER

Mary Jane McCarter, of Piedmont, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Barnette F. and Eula Jane Blakely Cleveland.

She was a retired Greenville County Auditor and was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack M. McCarter.

Surviving are Mary M. Strom and Rhett Bush, Ivar Dell and Ed Poore, Jr., J. Manley McCarter and Judy; two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Friday, May 12 in Graceland West Cemetery.

ROBERT EDWARD ‘BOB’ WHITNEY

Robert Edward “Bob” Whitney, 76, of Anderson, died Sunday, May 7, 2017.

Born in Pelzer, he was the son of the late Bob and Bill Whitney. He was a member of Wren Church of God and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Fay Whitney; daughter, Susan Nevada; sister, Angie McDonald; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 12 at Sosebee Mortuary, South Chapel. Burial followed with Military Honors at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

BOBBY JOE GUTHRIE

Bobby Joe Guthrie, 83, died Friday, May 12, 2017.

Born in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Roy and Fostina Black Guthrie.

Mr. Guthrie served as a paratrooper in the US Army and retired from a real estate career. He was known as a one of a kind character.

Surviving are daughter, Paula Santamaria; two grandchildren; and sister, Betty Sue Knight. He was preceded in death by brother, Don Guthrie.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

PIEDMONT—Nancy Jo Jones Richey, 78, wife of Johnny Lee Richey, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017.

Born in Metter, GA, she was the daughter of the late Joe Watson Jones and Claudia Belle Coleman Jones Durden. She was retired from Package Supply and Equipment, was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and Senior Fellowship.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by children, Joy Richey of Easley, James Kenneth Richey (Melaine) of Albuquerque, NM, Laura Richey Worsham (Michael) of Seneca; and nine grandchildren.

She was predeceased by daughter, Hope Richey McCurry; and brother, William Allan Jones.

Visitation was held Monday, May 15 from 2:15 – 4:15 p.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church. The funeral followed at 4:30 in the sanctuary. Burial was in the church cemetery.

WILLIAMSTON—Della Mae Rogers Clardy, 79, widow of Stanley Hall Clardy, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, Friday, May 12, 2017.

Born in Williamston, she was a daughter of the late Walter Rogers and Lillian Frances Bowen Rogers. She was retired from Cushman, a longtime member of Williamston Church of God and most recently joined Hillcrest Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Charlotte Merriam (Alfred) of Piedmont, Vickie Reed of Williamston, Lynn Johnson (Billy) of Belton; sons, Donald Clardy (Sherry) of Pelzer, Timothy Wayne Clardy (Marcia) of Belton; sister, Mary Ellison of Williamston; brother, Bill Rogers of Pelzer; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 15, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 4:00 in the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

SHIRLEY GAMBRELL

Shirley Ann Frazier Gambrell, 75, of Piedmont, wife of Ricky Gambrell, died Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Ruby Tony Frazier.

She was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by son, Josh Gambrell of Africa; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 16 in the Chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

R. WYATT DUNCAN, SR.

GREENVILLE, SC – Robert Wyatt Duncan, Sr., 86, of Greenville, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Brevard, NC, he was the son of the late William Kearney Duncan and Agnes Hayes Duncan.

Mr. Duncan was retired from H.T. Hackney. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and gardening.

Surviving are his wife Betty Lou Smith Duncan; his children, Robert Wyatt Duncan, Jr. of Weehawken, NJ, Becky Huff (Bill) of Pelzer and Libby Black (Don) of Abbeville; grandchildren, Chris Huff (Bromley), Candi Parker (Ryan), Carrie McCain (Shawn), Jeremy Burnett (Ashley), Marisa Black, Micah Black (Samantha), Cason Black, Tori Beth Black, Joshua Duncan, K.J. Duncan and Elijah Duncan; fourteen great grandchildren; and two sisters, Celeste Smith and Sue Smith both of Greenville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 5:00 PM at Siloam Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends prior to the service on Wednesday from 3:00 until 4:45 PM in the church sanctuary.

PELZER – Robert E. “Bob” Dacus, 73, husband of Sandra Mease Dacus, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Wyatt and Katie Black Dacus.  He was retired from Crossmark.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Chris Dacus (Letti) of Simpsonville and Scott Dacus of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Morgan, Chandler, Alec, Kayla Dacus; great-granddaughter, Kloe Young.

He was predeceased by a brother, Billy Dacus.

Visitation was held from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 15, at Beech Springs Tabernacle with the service following at 11:30 a.m. at the church.  Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Laura Woods Smith, 88, wife of Gerald Browning Smith, Sr., died Sunday, May 14, 2017 at her home.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late John Dewey and Christine McConnell Woods.  She was retired from Cushman and a member of White Plains Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Ginger Crawford of Belton and Betty Lewallen of Williamston; son, Gerald Smith, Jr. of Belton; sister, Joan McCuen; and one grandson.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the service.

PELZER – Betty Jean Storay Stewart, 85, widow of Jack Hughey Stewart, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Elijah and Essie Mae Renner Storay.  She was a member of Eastview Baptist Church.

Survivors include son, Jack Stewart (Jane); daughter, Annette Phillips (Charles); sisters, Evelyn Brown, Mary Eversman , Helen Raines, Nellie Phillips; brothers, Marvin Storay, Joe Storay, David Storay, J.W. Storay; grandchildren, Sabrina Phillips and Lisa Marie Kanea; great-grandchildren, Shaydon and Jenna Kanea.

She was predeceased by sister, Lucy Storay and brother, James Storay.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Eastview Baptist Church.  The service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of Bernice Mauney Powell and the late Horace Eugene Smith.
