Piedmont firefighters work to extinguish a car fire Tuesday morning. Highway 20 near Monticello Drive. Troopers were attempting to stop a speeding light-colored Monte Carlo on SC-20 near SC-86. The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit started. Within 2 minutes, the suspect vehicle started to smoke heavily. The vehicle came to a stop, both people got out and were taken into custody without incident. After taking the two people into custody, the suspect vehicle rolled into a trooper’s car (trooper was not injured). When the trooper moved his patrol car, the suspect’s vehicle rolled down an embankment and burst into flames. The driver, 35-year-old Steven Beacham, was charged with Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, Driving Under the Influence, and Driving Under Suspension.
