DALE MARTIN

WILLIAMSTON – C. Dale Martin, 80, husband of Carolyn Lee Hall “Carol” Martin, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019.

He was the son of the late Charlie and Ida Mae Rogers Martin. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, Mr. Martin served thirty-four years as a teacher, assistant coach, coach, assistant principal and principal before retiring from the public-school system in 1996.

Lovingly called “Coach” by his players and most people, he is the only coach at Palmetto High School to lead his football team to a 3A State Championship.

For eight years, he served on the Anderson County School Board and served thirty-three years on the Anderson School District One School Board. He was the Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Williamston for fifty-two years. Both the town of Williamston’s Recreation Complex and Palmetto Football Stadium are named for him to honor all his years of dedication.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Barry Dale Martin (Cindy) of Cheddar, Vic Martin (Sherri) of Piedmont; daughters, Miriam Nelson (Burriss) of Easley, Stephanie Martin (James) of Powdersville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 9 from 1:00 to 2:45 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 3:00, with burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

ETTA BINDER

PELZER – Margaret Willette “Etta” Melton Binder, 86, wife of the late Robert Walter “Bob” Binder, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn and Gladys Williamson Melton. She was a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

She is survived by sons, James Edward Hopkins, Jr. (Kathy) of Dickson, TN, Wilburn Lee Hopkins (Sheila) of Easley and Thomas Earl Hopkins of Pelzer and his fiancée, Donna Roberson of Cheddar; step-daughter, Deborah Binder Pigott (Dexter) of Orangeburg; sister, Viola “Lucy” Lombardi of Columbia; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by brother, George Melton; sisters, Sara Ann Cooper and Victoria Phillips.

Visitation was from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Sunday, January 6, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. The service followed at 2:00 pm in the mortuary chapel. Burial was at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

NORMAN COLE

Robert Norman Cole, 78, of Pelzer, husband of Vivian Darby Cole, died Friday, January 4, 2019.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late William Casper and Nellie Annabelle Tolliet Cole. He formerly worked for Daniel Construction.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Lynn C. Taylor and Sandra Tyler, both of Pelzer; sisters, Clovis Cole of Laurinburg, NC and Rendie Kolstad of Mooresville, NC; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 9, in the chapel of Gray Mortuary. Burial was held at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

TEE ASKELL KERNS CHILES

Tee Askell Kerns Chiles, 90, of Pelzer, widow of John W. Chiles, Jr., died Saturday, January 5, 2019 at McCall Hospice House.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Hamilton Y. and Virginia Ward Kerns. She was retired from Kemet and was a member of Tremont Church of God.

Surviving are four daughters, Virginia, Joye, Lynn, and Fran; son, Rudy; sister, Marion; brother, Frank; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and additional adopted loving family members, Tonya, Lisa, and the Nunes family.

Funeral service was held Monday, January 7 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial  followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

TINY VAUGHN

Thomas Edward “Tiny” Vaughn, 72, of Piedmont, died Thursday, December 27, 2018.

He was born in Simpsonville to the late James Richard Vaughn and Bessie Mae Hampton Vaughn. He worked many years at L.S. Green Plumbing in Mauldin.

Surviving are a daughter, Beth Bridges; a brother, Charles Vaughn; a sister, Carolyn Stone; two grandsons; and a great-grandson.

A Private Service for family will be held at a later date.

SANDRA BROWNING

Sandra Jean Weldon Browning, 55, of Piedmont died Saturday, December 29th, 2018.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Browning; three sons, Alex Heydorn and his dad Eric Heidorn, and Travis and Casey Browning; and five grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers and three sisters.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bessie Road Independent Baptist Church.

Family and friends will meet at the church for food and fellowship following the service.

JAMES ALVIN DARBY

James Alvin Darby, 71, of Pelzer, died Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Alvin Nelson and Thelma Brown Darby. A U.S. Army Veteran, he retired from Michelin.

He is survived by a son, Bradley Darby of Aurora, CO; and brothers, Charles and Fred Darby.

Visitation was held Wednesday, January 9  at Gray Mortuary.

The funeral will be Thursday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m. in the mortuary chapel, followed by burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

MARY LOUISE PITTS

Mary Louise Sams Pitts, 78, of Duncan, died Friday, January 4, 2019, at Greenvillle Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Greenville, a daughter of the late Elbert and Glaudis Sams. She was the widow of Thomas Ralph Pitts, Sr. She retired from Alcoa Corporation and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Terri Livingston of Taylors; a son,Thomas Ralph Pitts, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Vickie Alverson of Piedmont; Bobbie Cordell of Piedmont; Jean Green of Simpsonville; two brothers, Frankie Sams of Greenville, and Eddie Sams of Piedmont.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday, January 9, at Seawright Funeral Home. Burial followed at Westwood Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg.

EARL “SAM” ALLISON, SR.

Earl Wilton “Sam” Allison, Sr., 80, of Pelzer, husband of the late Edna Chapman Allison, died  Sunday, January 6, 2019 at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Street Clifton and Eva Mae Johnson Allison. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Estes Plant.

Survivors include daughter, Brenda Darlene Kelley of Pelzer; son, Earl Allison, Jr. of Honea Path; sister, Shirley Thompson of Piedmont; brothers, Donald E. Allison of Piedmont and Lewis D. Allison of Belton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Piedmont Church of God.

DANA E. WRIGHT

Dana E Wright, 41, of Williamston, died on Monday, January 7, 2019 in Anderson, SC.

Born in Anderson he was the son of Eddie Wright and the late Mica Wright.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his daughter: Danielle Lay, brother: Shannon Wright; and two grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his grandparents: Paul E and Ina Sue Wright.

Funeral Services will be held at a later date.
