A 6th grade student at Woodmont Middle School was detained this morning (Thursday) after a pistol was found in his backpack. He is being charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds and Unlawful Carrying of  Pistol.  Because the minor was under the age of 13, a pick-up order was issued by a family court judge, allowing deputies to officially place him under arrest. According to reports, just before 8:40 am, deputies responded to Woodmont Middle School, located at 325 N. Flat Rock Road in regards to a report that a student had a gun on a bus.
Once deputies arrived on scene, they made contact with the 6th grade, male student, and located a loaded pistol inside of the backpack he was wearing. That student is currently in custody and the incident remains under investigation. The Greenville County Sherriff’s Offcice said they do not have any knowledge that there was a threat directed to students or the school.
Investigators have learned that other students quickly notified administrators upon learning the student was possessing a gun. School administrators put the school on lockdown and called law enforcement to respond.
Lieutenant Ryan Flood, public information officer for the GCSO said, “The GCSO is extremely thankful for the students actions of notifying administrators of what they saw and very appreciative for the staff’s swift actions in taking the necessary measures; allowing deputies to take the student into custody without anyone being harmed.”
